This is an exciting opportunity to join wood sculptor Natasha Houseago for a taster of wood carving skills on the village green.
Natasha works with locally fallen green wood and you will have the chance to pick your choice of cherry, lime or perhaps ash to start your piece.

Each participant will learn how to work with the natural forms within the timber. They draw on their design and start to block out using a bowsaw. Once this is done, then the carving begins using a chisel and mallet. Once the piece is complete, finishing will be done with a rasp and scraper. Finally learning how to treat the wood using oils and wax.

Natasha Houseago has over 30 years of experience of residencies, commissions, public art projects and teaching wood-carving here and abroad.

Each participant can work on an idea that interests them. This might be a small creature, flower or perhaps a purely abstract design. Once the carving is finished it will be treated with Danish Oil, which helps to seal the wood and slow down any cracking.

This workshop is suitable for novice through to someone with carving skills.

Materials:

If the participant has a sketch book and pencil please bring it along. Can everyone wear sensible foot wear (e.g. no flip flops or sandals!)

Workmates, timber, tools, oils, waxes, paper, pencils and Art books will be available on the day.

This workshop will take place outside the marquee on the village green or inside the marquee if the weather doesn’t cooperate!
