Spend the day making a life sized realistic little coal tit with master felter Agnese Davies, who created the much-loved Octopus that was in the finals of our 2023 annual art competition.

First you will learn how to create very realistic fine bird feet using wire, wool and a few other materials. This is a method that Agnese has created and perfected over the years. With the remaining extended wires from the feet she will show you how to use them to make the rest of the armature and wrap and sculpt the wool around it with felting needles. You will also learn how to make the beaks and finish them with melted wax. Lastly Agnese will teach you how to blend and attach the top coat merino wool, make and attach thin and wax infused wings and the tail.

You will have printed reference diagrams and photos for guidance, as well as 3D coal tit examples on the table. Coal tits are beautiful little birds and you will have fun making your own little specimen.

This masterclass will give you technical knowledge and develop multiple skills to create any little garden bird in the future.

About the Tutor

Agnese Davies is a needle felting artist and perfected her skills by practicing and experimenting with wire, wool, wax and other natural materials. She has loved nature and animals since she was a child brought up on her Granny’s smallholding in Latvia where she was surrounded by natural wildflower meadows and a nearby river full of life. She wanted to create realistic animals in 3d, but only knew how to sew, knit and crochet. In 2018 she discovered needle felting and is finally fulfilling her childhood dream.

In 2023 Agnese was a finalist in the annual Broadway Arts Festival art competition, selling her entry, an incredible Octopus. She was also awarded Highly Commended at the Secret Gallery at Newent and won first prize at the Ross on Wye annual mixed media art competition. She recently spent a week at the ‘Nature in Art’ museum as their Artist in Residence and is a member of  TWASI – The Wildlife Art Society International.
