SUMMARY:The Great Broadway Portrait Paint-Off 2026
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the TV series Portrait Artist of the Year? Then this is for you… \nRunning alongside our famous plein air competition\, The Great Broadway Paint-Off\, we will also have a portrait painting competition taking place inside the Lifford Hall in Broadway. Amateur and professional artists from around the UK will spend the day painting the portrait of one of our ‘Broadway Legends’ from our local community\, competing for prizes. There will be approximately 4 artists per model\, the identity of which won’t be revealed until the day! \nThe painting zones will be roped off\, but the general public will be able to view the artists at work during the day from a viewing area. \nJudging will be done by the talented alla prima portrait artist Peter Keegan\, along with Festival Ambassador Margot James (former Minister for Digital & Creative Industries). \n\nPrizes:  \n\nMain prize: £300 (cash) sponsored by Helen & Hugh Munro (Trustee)\n2nd Place: A £75 voucher for Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes\n3rd Place: A Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes Peter Keegan Oils Set (RRP £59)\nVisitors’ Choice Prize (voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon): A 3 night stay at Russell Court Cottage in the grounds of Russell House in Broadway (Sleeps 6) – Note: the Visitors’ Choice Prize is shared with the main Great Broadway Paint-Off\n\nHow does it work? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy your ticket through the website well in advance (note: this event is likely to sell out weeks before).\nTurn up with your blank canvas and your kit at the Lifford Hall in the centre of the village to check in and get your blank canvas stamped & numbered on the reverse.\nSelect a pre-marked position to set up and await the arrival of your model\, who will arrive at 9am.\nSpend the day creating your masterpiece. Note we will need to give the model a short break each hour and a longer break for a bite to eat at lunch.\nComplete your portrait and hand it in at the desk when complete\, but by 2:15pm at the very latest. If you have used an easel\, please leave it on your easel for display in the exhibition.\nIf you would like to sell your work (we imagine the models may well be interested buyers)\, tell us the price when you hand it back in.\nThe entries will then form a selling exhibition and judged (all artists will need to leave the hall during the judging). Prize-winners will see a ribbon on their piece when the exhibition opens at 4pm.\nThe selling exhibition is then open to the public for all to enjoy from 4pm to 5pm.\nOnly artwork started and completed on the day will qualify.\nArtwork can be in any medium & any size\, however we cannot accept digital art as a medium for a number of reasons.\nWe process all artwork sales at the exhibition through our card machine and then transfer 90% of the sale price directly to your bank account in the following days. 10% of all sales are retained as commission to help cover the costs of running the competition.\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £20 \nThere are 21 tickets available for this event and they need to be purchased in advance. \nThis event has now SOLD OUT. \nParticipants will need to bring their own paper\, canvas and art supplies. SUMMARY:Classical Alla Prima Portraits from Live Models with Peter Keegan
DESCRIPTION:A 2 day portraiture oils workshop with professional artist & tutor\, Peter Keegan. \nWorking from 2 live models and inspired by the painterly approach to oil portrait painting used by great artists such as John Singer Sargent\, who famously painted Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose in Broadway\, Peter will guide and demonstrate the artistic principles and practices used by Sargent. \nWorking Alla Prima (wet-into-wet with oils) you will discuss and learn the importance of a tonal palette and how fully understanding tonal values will aid you in capturing the true form of the head. \nWorking from live models you will explore: \n\nExploring the face though form\, shape and value rather than reliance on a tight underdrawing\nPainterly mark-making and the bravura brush stroke\nGetting the most out of a limited palette and which brushes the great artists used\nAchieving both a likeness and (more importantly) the character of the model\nDetails – when to add them and where to leave them out\n\nThis course is ideal for those painters who are: \n\nLooking to deepen their understanding of traditional Alla Prima oil painting\nInterested in experiencing painting from live models\nWishing to explore the methods and ideas used by some of the great portraitists of the past\nLooking to move away from working tightly\nWishing to achieve a greater understanding of tonal values and a limited palette\nWhen to use painting mediums such as linseed oil and when to leave them alone\n\nThis 2 day course is suitable for painters with some experience of portrait painting in oils and is not suitable for the complete beginner. \nBy the end of the 2 days\, artists will have completed (or near completed) a single head and shoulders portrait. \nThe workshop will run from 10:30am-4:30pm on Friday 17th April and Saturday 18th April at the Lifford Hall in the centre of Broadway village. SUMMARY:Street Photography Workshop with Peter Martin
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day with professional photographer\, Peter Martin\, capturing village life and The Great Broadway Paint-Off that will be taking place in the village that day. \nEveryone has a story to tell. Some do it with words\, or music\, or art\, but this workshop is for someone who wants to tell a story with their camera. \nThe day starts with an early morning session where Peter will cover all the important elements of reportage Street Photography and how to capture the shots needed to document life… with the aim of creating a photo essay comprising of a minimum of 5 photographs. The photo essay can illustrate either the event as a whole\, or the story of one of the artists from beginning to end of the day. \nThe group will then be released into the village to spend a couple of hours capturing scenes in the village individually. \nThe group then reconvenes at 12:30 to have lunch\, share shots captured so far and obtain advice from Peter. \nAfter the lunchtime session the photographers will once again venture out into the village capturing the rest of the day and the culmination of the Paint-Off with the exhibition and announcement of prizewinners in the marquee from 4-5pm. \nThe day will conclude with a wrap up session at 5pm. The group will then have the opportunity to share their resulting work online after the editing step is complete. \nParticipants will have the chance to connect with Peter via email and phone in advance of the workshop in order to help them prepare and get the most out of the day\, discussing approaches and possibilities. \nThis workshop is open to anyone age 16 and over\, and especially useful for those working towards their Photography A level. \nWorkshop participants can spend as little or as much time as they like capturing scenes during the day. \nAbout Tutor Peter Martin: \nCanadian born Peter Martin became a professional at 16 when a photo was published on the front page of a Toronto daily newspaper. Over the last 40 years Martin has worked in over 30 countries accumulating well over 10\,000 credited assignments as both freelance and staff photographer for various newspapers\, news outlets and publications including the Montreal Gazette and the Washington Post.\nHis varied and diverse portfolio of work includes major sporting and entertainment events\, international fashion shoots\, Popes\, Presidents\, Royalty and the fall of the Berlin Wall. His work has been displayed in several solo and group exhibits and in 2008 his photograph of Terry Fox was voted #4 of the Top Ten Historical Photos That Changed Canada. In 2015 he opened his own gallery (Peter Martin Gallery) in Stow-On-The-Wold\, in the Cotswolds. \nWhat to bring: \n\nAny type of digital camera. DESCRIPTION:An informal talk about surviving as a professional artist. Freelance for 36 years\, Claire Henley has illustrated such diverse things as margarine tubs and children’s books before becoming a fine artist 15 years ago.  \nTopics will include finding your tribe\, being organised\, showing and selling your work\, galleries\, social media\, multiple income streams\, licensing\, talks and demonstrations and\, finally\, your questions. \nAlthough the emphasis will be on making money from your art\, hobby artists should learn a lot too. Since there’s no magic formula\, Claire will simply be talking about things that have worked for her\, things that didn’t really come off\, and things that were a total disaster!  \nThere will be a Q&A session at the end of the talk. DESCRIPTION:Spend the day experimenting with 3 different fabric printing techniques with Liske Johnson (BA Hons Textile Design) & Claire Lundy (BA Hons Printed Textiles) from Littleheath Barn Studio. \nThis is the perfect introduction to printing\, where you will create a selection of printed fabric samples over the day to use in future projects. \nThe three print techniques you will practice are: \n\nIndian block printing – explore pattern and composition\nGelli plate printing – use stencils\, and wooden blocks to create exciting layered fabrics\nThermofax screen printing – a simple form of screen printing\, we have lots of designs for you to choose from to create bespoke fabrics\n\nSuitable for beginners\, we will work onto white cotton. \nThis workshop will be taking place in the Lifford Hall in the centre of Broadway. \nTickets £100 (15 Places) \nWhat to bring/wear: \nBring an apron and wear old clothes. DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that we are teaming up with the Broadway Cinema Club to bring you a screening of ‘Frida’ on the evening of Thursday 12th June. \nFRIDA is a vivid cinematic rendering of the life of artist Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek)\, released in 2002. \nDying at 47\, Frida’s life was one filled with tragedy and turmoil far beyond her years. While undoubtedly helping to fuel her passion for painting\, her relationship with fellow artist\, husband\, and sometimes mentor Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) is portrayed as tortuous on many levels. Frida is shown to follow his lead with both extramarital female partners and male partners\, including Soviet political exile Leon Trotsky (Geoffrey Rush). \nThe time period of Frida’s life is one of great political strife and revolutionary ideals in Mexico\, and the film seethes with the fervor of unrest. Her artwork is vividly woven into the film through digital transitions that seem to bring her paintings to life at times\, or else incorporate her visual motifs into powerful dream sequences. It will captivate any viewer with even a passing interest in understanding the fevered lives of such great artists. \nRunning time 122 minutes. DESCRIPTION:A 2 day portraiture oils workshop with professional artist & tutor\, Peter Keegan. \nWorking from photographs and inspired by the painterly approach to oil portrait painting used by great artists such as John Singer Sargent\, who famously painted Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose in Broadway\, Peter will guide and demonstrate the artistic principles and practices used by Sargent. \nWorking Alla Prima (wet-into-wet with oils) you will discuss and learn the importance of a tonal palette and how fully understanding tonal values will aid you in capturing the true form of the head. \nWorking from photographs provided or using one of your own images you will explore: \n\nExploring the face though form\, shape and value rather than reliance on a tight underdrawing\nPainterly mark-making and the bravura brush stroke\nGetting the most out of a limited palette and which brushes the great artists used\nAchieving both a likeness and (more importantly) the character of the model\nDetails – when to add them and where to leave them out\n\nThis course is ideal for those painters who are: \n\nLooking to deepen their understanding of traditional Alla Prima oil painting\nWishing to explore the methods and ideas used by some of the great portraitists of the past\nLooking to move away from working tightly\nWishing to achieve a greater understanding of tonal values and a limited palette\nWhen to use painting mediums such as linseed oil and when to leave them alone\n\nThis 2 day course is suitable for painters with some experience of portrait painting in oils and is not suitable for the complete beginner. \nBy the end of the 2 days\, artists will have completed (or near completed) a single head and shoulders portrait. \nThe workshop will run from 10am-4pm on Wednesday 11th June and 10am-4pm on Thursday 12th June. \nTickets £220 (Limited to 12 places) \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. DESCRIPTION:During this workshop students will learn about design and construction of a contemporary still life including how to incorporate collage and pattern\, techniques in acrylic paint\, colour palette and mixing\, and how to move away from reality. \nThis workshop is aimed at all levels\, although a bit of experience in using acrylic paints would be useful. \nWe will work from sketches made first. SUMMARY:An Introduction to En Plein Air Painting with Roger Dellar ROI\, RSMA\, RI\, PS\, WGA
DESCRIPTION:For those who have some experience of painting in oils\, but have little or no experience of painting outdoors and always fancied having a go! \nRoger Dellar is a member of the ROI\, RSMA\, RI\, PS and the Wapping Group of Artists and is an extremely experienced tutor. \nOver this 2 day workshop\, you will cover oil painting techniques\, how to select a composition\, lay on the paint in an ‘alla prima’ approach and learn how to capture a painting in 1 – 2.5 hours. \nThere will be demonstrations of techniques as well as plenty of individual advice and guidance given. Participants can expect to achieve at least one completed painting\, as well as plenty of practice. \nThe workshop will take place both indoors at the Lifford Hall and outdoors around the very picturesque Cotswold village of Broadway. \nTickets £200 (15 Places) \nMaterials List \nYou will need to provide all of your own materials and kit. SUMMARY:2 Day Watercolour Masterclass with Hazel Soan: Figures & Flowers
DESCRIPTION:This 2 day masterclass explores watercolour’s wet into wet blending technique with renowned artist Hazel Soan. The workshop is geared to an intermediary level of skill but both an adventurous beginner and a seasoned professional would doubtless enjoy the experience as watercolour reveals its wonders! \nWe will use two different subjects\, figures and flowers\, both of which are subjects that benefit from the organic liveliness that wet into wet blending allows in painting. The soft blending that the wet into wet technique enables\, means the watercolourist can make paintings feel more like what we see and enjoy at first sight. Rich blends\, soft edges\, lost and found passages of colour\, description without unnecessary definition\, a suggestion of movement\, a hint of time – all these aspects create life in a painting. \nThe first day’s workshop concentrates on painting figures\, possibly in a cafe setting\, and will be a hall based masterclass exploring the use of wet into wet watercolour blending to enhance the suggestion of liveliness and movement. We will work from reference photographs. The first day will take place in the Lifford Hall in central Broadway. \nThe second day’s workshop explores the use of wet into wet blending for representing the organic nature of flowers in the spectacular private gardens of Springfield House in Broadway. We will start with individual blooms and then paint a wider scene\, but as we are painting from life\, specific subjects will only be determined on the day dependent on the weather\, the light and the flowers blooming around us. \nTickets £220 – limited to 15 places \n(Includes a light lunch on the second day) \nTickets will be going on sale to the public at 10am on Friday 26th January 2024\, and 1 week earlier for festival benefactors.\nDo consider becoming a Benefactor (for as little as £50) to secure priority booking for all our 2024 events. Her work is represented in private and public collections worldwide\, including the National Portrait Gallery and the Ritz. Hazel has held numerous solo exhibitions\, mainly in London and the UK\, but also in Venezuela\, Namibia and Zimbabwe. She has participated in mixed exhibitions\, including Royal Academy\, Barbican Centre\, Midland Open\, Mall Galleries\, and David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.\nHazel is a natural and talented communicator and became popular for her television role as an Art Expert on Channel 4’s Watercolour Challenge and her own series\, Anglia TV’s Splash of Colour.\nHer passion for painting is shared through books\, DVD films\, workshops\, lectures and painting holidays\, demonstrating the vibrant immediacy of the watercolour medium and the properties of watercolour pigments. SUMMARY:Intro to Lino Block Printing - Linen Cushion Workshop with Albert Harvey
DESCRIPTION:On this day course you will work with Albert Harvey\, a print maker and textile designer from Oxfordshire\, to firstly design your very own bespoke Lino print block\, carve it and then use it to print your linen cushion fabric. Albert will then take away the resulting fabric to make it into an expertly finished and piped cushion which will be then posted to you. \n\nThe day will start with a quick introduction to lino print and block print.\nYou will then go on to draw your own bespoke design\, please bring inspiration with you! Albert will also bring some ideas and items to inspire and help you on your way.\nAlbert will then demonstrate how to carve your Lino\, before you go ahead yourselves. Plenty of opportunity for 1:1 tuition.\nThe next step will be to mix your bespoke colour using pigments and mixing them into a binder.\nThen we move onto the best part\, printing your fabric! The fabrics will be taken away by Albert who will expertly finish and pipe the cushions before posting back to you.\nYou will then have your very own cushion and your own bespoke Lino block that you can use (along with the learning from the workshop) to create further pieces in the same design.\n\n\n\nMaterials: \nEverything you need will be supplied\, but please remember to bring inspiration for your own design. DESCRIPTION:During this 1 day workshop you will be encouraged to focus on the core principles of painting to free up your acrylics and you will learn techniques for painting loosely in layers. DESCRIPTION:Watch contemporary impressionist artist Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA\, paint a complete portrait from start to finish from a live model.  \nHaidee-Jo strives for simplicity and economy in her work\, and she will show you how she makes every mark count.  \nRichard Cornwall was the winner of ‘Best Beard in Broadway‘ and will be Haidee-Jo’s model for the afternoon! \nThis event will be taking place in the Lifford Hall in Broadway. \nTickets £17 \nAbout Haidee-Jo Summers: \nHaidee-Jo is a full-time professional artist best known for painting ‘en plein air’. An elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters (ROI) and the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) her work can be seen each year at the Mall Galleries in London in these prestigious society exhibitions. Haidee-Jo writes regularly for The Artist magazine and is proud to be an editorial consultant alongside David Curtis ROI RSMA. Her first book on oil painting\, ‘Vibrant Oils’ (published by Search Press)\, has been reprinted in Spanish\, Italian\, French and Chinese. Her second book\, Plein air painting in oils\, has been released in spring 2022 and is already reprinted in Russian. She has produced two popular DVDs with APV films. Although oils are very much her preferred medium\, in the 1990’s Haidee-Jo produced a large body of work for the Encyclopaedia of Watercolour Techniques and is an avid sketcher. In recent years she has been invited to judge UK and international plein air events\, after winning many prizes for her work which features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills. \nHaidee-Jo gained a degree in illustration following an art foundation course and graduated in 1994. She has been exhibiting and teaching ever since\, in recent years having cut back on teaching commitments to focus on painting and writing. She believes very much in continuing to grow and develop\, all the while striving to express her personal voice in paint and to do so more and more succinctly. \n‘My work is a celebration of light filled moments revealed in rich and vibrant oil paint using my personal visual language of fresh and direct brushmarks. Painting en plein air is central to my practice but I am equally at home working from a model\, still life or interior. I find beauty in the ordinary\, mundane and intimate rather than the grand vista.
