SUMMARY:The Great Broadway Portrait Paint-Off
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the TV series Portrait Artist of the Year? Then this is for you… \nNew for 2025!\nRunning alongside our famous plein air competition\, The Great Broadway Paint-Off\, this year we will also have a portrait painting competition taking place inside the main marquee on the village green. Amateur and professional artists from around the UK will spend the day painting the portrait of one of our ‘Broadway Legends’ from our local community\, competing for prizes. There will be approximately 5 artists per model\, the identity of which won’t be revealed until the day! \nThe painting zones will be roped off\, but the general public will be able to view the artists at work from a pathway down the centre of the marquee. \n\nThere are main prizes plus a visitors’ choice prize voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon. \nJudging will be done by the talented alla prima portrait artist Peter Keegan\, along with Festival Ambassador Margot James who is the former Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries. \nPrizes: \nMain prize £300 (cash) sponsored by Alastair & Julieanne McGrigor (Trustee) \n2nd Place: An overnight stay with 3 course dinner\, full English breakfast and a round of golf at Tewkesbury Park Hotel \n3rd Place: A £75 voucher for Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes \nVisitors’ Choice Prize (voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon): A 3 night stay at Russell Court Cottage in the grounds of Russell House in Broadway (Sleeps 6) – Note: the Visitors’ Choice Prize is shared with the main Great Broadway Paint-Off \nHow does it work? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy your ticket through the website well in advance (note: this event is likely to sell out weeks before).\nTurn up with your blank canvas and your kit at the marquee on the village green in the centre of the village to check in and get your blank canvas stamped & numbered on the reverse.\nSelect a pre-marked position to set up and await the arrival of your model\, who will arrive at 10am.\nSpend the day creating your masterpiece. Note we will need to give the model a short break each hour and a longer break for a bite to eat at lunch.\nComplete your portrait and hand it in at the desk in the marquee from 2pm\, but by 3:20pm at the very latest. If you have used an easel\, please leave it on your easel for display in the exhibition.\nIf you would like to sell your work (we imagine the models may well be interested buyers)\, tell us the price when you hand it back in.\nThe entries will then form a selling exhibition and judged (all artists will need to leave the marquee during the judging). Prize-winners will see a ribbon on their piece when the exhibition opens at 4pm.\nThe selling exhibition is then open to the public for all to enjoy from 4pm to 5pm.\nOnly artwork started and completed on the day will qualify.\nArtwork can be in any medium & any size\, however we cannot accept photography or iPad art as a medium for a number of reasons.\nWe process all artwork sales at the exhibition through our card machine and then transfer 90% of the sale price directly to your bank account in the following days. 10% of all sales are retained as commission to help cover the costs of running the competition. You will receive a text if your entry sells at the exhibition.\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £20 \nThere are 25 tickets available for this event and they need to be purchased in advance\, by 30th May at the latest. \nParticipants will need to bring their own paper\, canvas and art supplies. These will not be provided. \nTimings: \n\nRegistration: 9-9:45am\nModels arrive and painting starts: 10am\n30 min break for lunch: 1pm\nHand in completed portrait: 2-3:30pm\nJudging: 3:30-4pm\nExhibition open: 4-5pm\n\nBroadway Arts Festival accepts no responsibility for loss\, damage or injury during the day \nWhy not stay for dinner?\nCelebrate the end of the festival at our Jazz Supper Club on the village green from 7:30pm.\n

SUMMARY:En Plein Air Painting 2 day Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:Learn about painting the light and capturing the essence while painting plein air in the stunning private gardens of Springfield House in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo is an internationally renowned plein air painter\, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and elected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of two books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’ and ‘Plein air painting in oils’\, as well as a Broadway Arts Festival Ambassador. \nHaidee-Jo’s work features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills\, which result in lively celebratory paintings that glow with light and sing with colour. \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. Haidee-Jo will be working with oil paints\, but acrylics or gouache can be used if preferred. \nwww.haideejo.com \nTickets £245 (15 Places) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. If you buy more than two tickets for this event they will be refunded (less the booking fees) and put back up for sale. \nMaterials List / What to bring: \n\nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because\, even on a warm day\, you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too.\nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea.\nA viewfinder if you have one.\nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain.\nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you have practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it. \nA stool if you prefer to sit.\n\nBasic colour palette Haidee-Jo uses on location;  \n\nTitanium white\, Cadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake\nCadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow\nCadmium red\nAlizarin crimson\nKings blue deep\nPhthalo blue lake \nUltramarine blue\nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna/raw umber\nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a small round or two in nylon or sable. I particularly like to use Rosemary brushes’ Ivory or Eclipse ranges. I have a twelve brush long handled set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website.\n\nPainting panels – any well primed boards are fine\, such as MDF panels with several coats of acrylic ‘gesso’ primer. The Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer works well. \nMy preference is for an oil primed linen canvas mounted to board\, or you can make similar with a muslin cloth and acrylic primer (see my Instagram story highlight on panel prep). \nSize wise think small and fast\, recommended sizes such as 8” x 10”\, 9” x 12”\, 10” x 10”\, 11” x 14”. \nI suggest pre-tinting the boards beforehand so that they are not stark white\, but more of a light to mid-tone warm grey. A tiny amount of burnt sienna and ultramarine mixed in with plenty of turps and rubbed all over will give you a pleasant light grey which will have a warm or cool bias depending on your mix.  \nOr for a faster drying alternative mix acrylic paint colours with your acrylic primer to a suitable tint (you can’t do this if your surface is oil primed of course). \nHaidee-Jo’s essential equipment list – which all fits in a medium sized rucksack  \n\nPochade box\nLightweight camera tripod\n2 or 4 panels in a small panel carrier\nSmall tubes of oil colour in a zip bag\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\n\n \n \n\n \nSpringfield House Gardens \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:An exciting opportunity to paint in a beautiful private garden on the Upper High Street in Broadway.  True to its name\, The Hill is a classic Cotswold stone house nestled in a hillside garden with topiary\, mature trees and summerhouses\, and fabulous views to Bredon Hill and the Malverns.  Participants will be painting outdoors with the aim of capturing aspects of the garden in vibrant and expressive watercolour.   \nBobby Open won the Great Broadway Paint Off in 2023 and paints in watercolour. \nThe day will include demonstrations of useful techniques and approaches to working outdoors in watercolour.  There will be plenty of time for participants to explore the garden and paint fragments and views that catch their eye\, particularly looking at how nature relates to more formal elements.   \nSuitable for those with experience of painting in watercolour. \nBobby’s paintings can be seen on Instagram at www.instagram.com/bobbyopen \nTickets £100 (15 Places) \nMATERIALS LIST \nThe materials listed below are only a general guide based on what I use.  Painting materials can be expensive and\, whilst the quality of materials tends to be reflected in the quality of one’s paintings\, suggestions about materials will be given during the workshop so if in doubt just bring whatever materials you already have and do not rush into buying more. \nBRUSHES \nI mainly use pointed round pure Kolinsky sable brushes (sometimes called designer round).  Typically\, in the studio\, I use da Vinci series 35; outdoors\, I use Escoda Reserva\, Isabey or Rosemary & Co travel brushes\, because the handle protects the brush when travelling.  I tend to use brush sizes 4\, 6\, 8\, 10 and 12.  If I had to choose only one\, it would be a versatile size 7 or 8. \nPAINTS \nI use artists’ quality paint from tubes\, squeezed into pans in a watercolour paint box.  It is essential that the tip of the brush can pick up wet paint: if the paint is too hard\, brush tips become worn and the paint will be less vibrant.  A small plastic spray bottle can be useful to keep paints moist.  Matchsticks or toothpicks are also useful to stir up paint. \nThere are different types of paint box.  Frank Herring makes a good\, affordable plastic paint box.  There are also enameled metal boxes\, including aluminium\, steel and brass: aluminium and brass tend to be more durable (steel boxes eventually rust). \n\nMy full colour palette includes a range of blues\, reds\, yellows and earth colours.  I use Holbein Artists’ Watercolour tubes (H) and Winsor and Newton Professional (W&N).  The colours I’ve underlined are the ones I use most outdoors:\nBlues: Cerulean Blue (H); Cobalt Blue; Ultramarine Blue Deep (H) or French Ultramarine (W&N).\nViolets: Cobalt Violet (H); Ultramarine Violet (W&N); Mineral Violet (H).\nReds: Carmine (H); Cadmium Red Deep (H) or Cadmium Red (W&N).\nYellows: New Gamboge (H); Cadmium Yellow Pale (H); Cadmium Yellow Light (H); Cadmium Yellow Deep (H); Cadmium Orange (W&N).\nEarth Colours and Greens: Yellow Ochre (H); Raw Umber; Burnt Sienna; Burnt Umber; Viridian.\nOccasional Colours: Ivory Black; Jaune Brilliant (H); Lavender (H); other greens such as Cobalt\, Turquoise\, Olive\, Oxide of Chromium and Perylene.\n\nPAPER \n\nI typically use 140lb Fabriano Artistico extra white cold pressed 100% cotton acid-free paper.  Sheets cut into half or quarter are usually more cost effective than blocks.  Saunders Waterford and Arches are also good options.\nA sketchbook can be useful for making notes and quick compositional sketches.\n\nOTHER ITEMS \nI use a Pentel 0.9mm B mechanical pencil; a Faber Castell foldable water pot; metal clips or masking tape to hold paper to a sheet of foamboard or cardboard; kitchen paper and a sponge.  Erasers are banned!  (Not really\, but a soft putty eraser will help to protect the paper surface).  A bottle of water.  Penknife. \nA cap or rimmed hat is useful to limit glare.  If you prefer to sit\, a folding chair or stool may be handy.  A folding easel will be necessary unless you are happy working in your lap.  Please dress for the weather and bring sunscreen/bug spray as appropriate! \nThe Hill\n \n  \n \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Expressive Landscapes with Rachel Cronin: 3 Day Abstract Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This 3 day workshop will help you loosen up and create expressive and bold landscapes using the beautiful surroundings of Stanton Guildhouse as inspiration working with landscape artist\, Rachel Cronin. \nThe aim of this course is to help you free yourselves from the need to create representational work in order to create work that expresses how you feel instead. If you have been wanting to let go of accuracy and loosen up then this is for you. Rachel will show you how to work across multiple pieces so that if you get stuck on one painting\, you can move on to the next. This will help you to view your work with more objectivity and less judgement as you return to it multiple times across the weekend. The focus will be less on creating finished paintings and more on helping you build a toolkit of techniques and approaches so that you can add these to your own creative practice. \nThere will be plenty of demonstrations so that you can see how to mix paint of the right consistency and colour for your work\, and you will also have the opportunity to experiment with creating texture by scraping and sanding back paint\, using glaze mediums and texture paste\, as well as using thick and thin paint. You will spend time exploring both soft and hard edges by pushing and dragging paint\, using cloths to smudge out colour and masking off with tape to create strong contrast. All students will receive help and guidance throughout the workshop\, with individual tuition throughout to help you establish your personal creative motivations. \nWe will use the Art Room at Stanton Guildhouse as our base but you can expect to be outside in the beautiful grounds at Stanton Guildhouse with its far reaching views from the Cotswold escarpment. \nPlease note that the Art Room is not wheelchair accessible and is up a series of steep\, external steps. For more information about access\, please email workshops@broadwayartsfestival.com \nThis workshop is for those with some experience of painting. \nLight lunch will be provided on day 2 & 3\, please bring a lunch with you for the first day. \nTickets £390 (12 Places) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nNOTE: There is beautiful onsite accommodation available to book at Stanton Guildhouse – email info@broadwayartsfestival.com to enquire/book. \n  \nDay One: \nOn day one we will gather information from our surroundings whilst using expressive drawing techniques like blind contour and non-dominant hand drawing. You will also be encouraged to stay present to whatever the landscape is showing you and explore how these responses inform your marks and lines. After some initial warm up sketches\, we will move onto using viewfinders to create thumbnail sketches. This will help you to observe and understand the underlying structure of the landscape and see how different elements like fields\, hedgerows\, trees and houses are arranged on the picture plane. We will then take these sketches and create several slightly bigger painted versions that allow us to begin to explore brush marks and a limited colour palette. We will work with only a selected number of actual marks so you will be able to work towards looseness and observe that even a small scale up will change the way you make marks.  \nDay Two: \nOn day two we will scale up further still and begin to look at paint application\, transitions and the principles of contrast. We will take a couple of our sketches and use them as inspiration for some larger pieces of work where we explore brush-craft and paint application in more detail. We will experiment with a selection of tools to create texture and variation within our painted surface such as wire brushes\, soft rags\, masking tape\, palette knives\, silicone scrapers and cut-up credit cards. As the day progresses\, we will begin to introduce different acrylic paint mediums such as texture paste and glaze medium.  \nDay Three: \nHaving spent two days using a limited colour palette\, day three will be spent exploring different types of colour groupings. We will explore bright\, saturated colours as well as desaturated\, neutral colours and you will be able to create new work using a different type of colour story. We will also explore composition in more detail\, referring back to our thumbnail sketches to help us create focus and contrast. The last day will draw to a close with a celebration of your work and a chance to share your experiences. \n\nYou will need to bring:\n\n\n\nA portable sketching kit to include:\nA sketchbook (it doesn’t matter what size but you will need to carry it around!)\nA selection of pencils\, charcoal\, a rubber and a sharpener\nA brush pen\n\nDry media such as colour pencils\, crayons and pastels if you have them\n\nYour acrylic paints to include Lemon Yellow\, Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue\, Burnt Sienna\, Crimson\, and Paynes Grey\nA set of brushes suitable for use with acrylics\nA jar for holding your water\nA palette- a Stay wet palette\nKitchen roll\nPalette knives or paint shapers if you have them\nRachel will provide 2 wooden panels for each participant (included in the ticket price).
