DESCRIPTION:On this walking tour of two prestigious private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nTower Close in Snowshill (starting point)\nThe Court in Broadway\n\nThe tour will start at Tower Close in Snowshill. Our friends at Snowshill Manor (National Trust) have agreed that our garden tour ticket holders can use their overflow car park (free) for the duration of the tour. Do consider a tour of the Manor before your garden tour with us; we’d recommend it! \nTower Close has striking views of the Malvern Hills from this 3 acre Cotswold garden positioned at the top of the charming village of Snowshill. Featured in Country Life\, the C17 Grade II listed house is surrounded by terraces of garden rooms. Herbaceous borders\, espaliered fruit trees and sunken vegetable garden. Plants tumble down the terraces to a romantic stream\, ponds\, garden features\, orchard and meadow. \nAfter finishing the tour at Tower Close\, please return to your vehicles and make the short drive to The Court on the Snowshill road on the outskirts of Broadway (next to St Eadburgha’s Church\, which is also worth a visit). \nThe beautiful gardens at The Court were designed by landscape designer\, horticulturist and writer Dan Pearson and are set in 6 acres behind a high stone wall and bounded on one side by a very impressive topiary yew tunnel. The formal gardens include glorious herbaceous borders\, a kitchen garden with raised beds and fruit cages\, a parterre and a large lawn leading down to the brook and the fields and wildlife lake beyond. Other areas are planted with ornamental willows and wild flowers. \nNote this garden tour is not suitable for those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility due to many steps and gravel paths. However should you wish to just sit and enjoy the views this would be fine! \nMarion Mako will be leading the tours and is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century\, and continue this theme today. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nRussell House (starting point)\nAbbots Grange\n\nThe tour will start at Russell House which was the home of the Broadway Art Colony in the 1880’s\, and was the setting for Sargent’s Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose which now hangs in the Tate in London; a beautiful one acre garden including gothic tower\, gazebo\, and ice-house. \nThe tour will then continue on to Abbots Grange\, a short walk away\, the grounds of which used to be connected by a garden gate during the arts colony and Sargent years. \nSat in over 8 acres of parkland grounds\, Abbots Grange is the oldest dwelling in Broadway and one of the oldest domestic/monastic properties in the UK\, built during the early part of the 14th Century. It is considered by the Institute of Archaeology to be one of the most important and best preserved English monastic manor houses\, and has a rich and fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1880’s by designer William Morris and then the American Frank Millet and became a sanctuary for some of the greatest names in European and American culture in the 1880’s. \nMarion Mako is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the Gardening website Gardenista. Successive generations have all added their horticultural mark to this large garden with its huge herbaceous border and newly planted sundial bed.\nOrchard Farm: From Royal connections to great twentieth century design\, Orchard Farm continues to be sensitively restored by the current owners\, as well as introducing new and exciting design elements\n\nMarion’s design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on. SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Broadway Gardens with Marion Mako
DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nMarion is a garden historian\, planting designer\, garden tour leader and lecturer at The London College of Garden Design. \nThis tour includes Court Farm & Orchard Farm …neighbouring prestigious properties on the Upper High Street in Broadway: \n\nCourt Farm: With many historic and artistic associations this garden may well have influenced the design of nearby Hidcote. Successive generations have all added their horticultural mark to this large garden with its huge herbaceous border and newly planted sundial bed.\nOrchard Farm: From Royal connections to great twentieth century design\, Orchard Farm continues to be sensitively restored by the current owners\, as well as introducing new and exciting design elements\n\nMarion’s design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the Gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours.
