DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nMarion is a garden historian\, planting designer\, garden tour leader and lecturer at The London College of Garden Design. \nThis tour includes Court Farm & Orchard Farm …neighbouring prestigious properties on the Upper High Street in Broadway: \n\nCourt Farm: With many historic and artistic associations this garden may well have influenced the design of nearby Hidcote. Successive generations have all added their horticultural mark to this large garden with its huge herbaceous border and newly planted sundial bed.\nOrchard Farm: From Royal connections to great twentieth century design\, Orchard Farm continues to be sensitively restored by the current owners\, as well as introducing new and exciting design elements\n\nMarion’s design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the Gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. DESCRIPTION:An exclusive tour of Arts & Crafts masterpiece Madresfield Court & Gardens to discover how it became the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh & Brideshead Revisited. \nMadresfield Court near Malvern\, is a moated stately house\, and home to the Lygon family for almost 900 years. It played a significant part in the Arts & Crafts movement and was the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh’s novel\, Brideshead Revisited. \nThe afternoon tour includes return coach travel from Broadway\, a guided tour of the house\, and time to explore the gardens and have refreshments. \nThe coach will set off from Broadway at 1:30pm for the hour drive to Madresfield Court\, arriving back into Broadway at approximately 6pm. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a private tour of Stanway House and the famous water gardens.  An outstanding Jacobean Manor House\, since 1533 Stanway House has been the home of The Tracys of Stanway and their descendants the Earl of Wemyss. \nHome of the Earls of Wemyss\, it has many literary and artistic connections – J M Barrie\, creator of Peter Pan\, was a frequent visitor\, and donated the cricket pavilion\, Lady Elcho and her two sisters were the subject of Sargent’s The Wyndham Sisters\, and more recently\, the house features in Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City series. DESCRIPTION:On this walking tour of two prestigious private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nTower Close in Snowshill (starting point)\nThe Court in Broadway\n\nThe tour will start at Tower Close in Snowshill. Our friends at Snowshill Manor (National Trust) have agreed that our garden tour ticket holders can use their overflow car park (free) for the duration of the tour. Do consider a tour of the Manor before your garden tour with us; we’d recommend it! \nTower Close has striking views of the Malvern Hills from this 3 acre Cotswold garden positioned at the top of the charming village of Snowshill. Featured in Country Life\, the C17 Grade II listed house is surrounded by terraces of garden rooms. Herbaceous borders\, espaliered fruit trees and sunken vegetable garden. Plants tumble down the terraces to a romantic stream\, ponds\, garden features\, orchard and meadow. \nAfter finishing the tour at Tower Close\, please return to your vehicles and make the short drive to The Court on the Snowshill road on the outskirts of Broadway (next to St Eadburgha’s Church\, which is also worth a visit). \nThe beautiful gardens at The Court were designed by landscape designer\, horticulturist and writer Dan Pearson and are set in 6 acres behind a high stone wall and bounded on one side by a very impressive topiary yew tunnel. The formal gardens include glorious herbaceous borders\, a kitchen garden with raised beds and fruit cages\, a parterre and a large lawn leading down to the brook and the fields and wildlife lake beyond. Other areas are planted with ornamental willows and wild flowers. \nNote this garden tour is not suitable for those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility due to many steps and gravel paths. However should you wish to just sit and enjoy the views this would be fine! \nMarion Mako will be leading the tours and is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century\, and continue this theme today. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nRussell House (starting point)\nAbbots Grange\n\nThe tour will start at Russell House which was the home of the Broadway Art Colony in the 1880’s\, and was the setting for Sargent’s Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose which now hangs in the Tate in London; a beautiful one acre garden including gothic tower\, gazebo\, and ice-house. \nThe tour will then continue on to Abbots Grange\, a short walk away\, the grounds of which used to be connected by a garden gate during the arts colony and Sargent years. \nSat in over 8 acres of parkland grounds\, Abbots Grange is the oldest dwelling in Broadway and one of the oldest domestic/monastic properties in the UK\, built during the early part of the 14th Century. It is considered by the Institute of Archaeology to be one of the most important and best preserved English monastic manor houses\, and has a rich and fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1880’s by designer William Morris and then the American Frank Millet and became a sanctuary for some of the greatest names in European and American culture in the 1880’s. \nMarion Mako is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. She finds beauty in the ordinary\, mundane\, and intimate rather than the grand vista.   She has written two books on oil painting.   \nDavid Curtis ROI RSMA – David is one of the country’s finest and best-known painters.  He has won numerous awards and has written several books.  He represents the gold standard of modern day “real painters”.   \nTushar Sabale WGA\, CAS (Festival Ambassador) – Tushar is an award-winning Indian born\, British artist based in London.  He paints mainly from life and plein air in oil colours but occasionally enjoys painting objects.  He places his work between Impressionism and Realism and some Luminist touches. \nMattie Ree Neal – A talented young American portrait painter (and daughter of portrait artist Michael Shane Neal) Mattie is a member of the Portrait Society of America. SUMMARY:2 Day En Plein Air Painting Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to practice plein air painting in oils or acrylics with acclaimed artist Haidee-Jo Summers\, in one of the most exclusive private gardens in Broadway. \nLearn about capturing the essence while plein air painting in the incredible garden setting of Court Farm on the famous Upper High Street in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo is an internationally renowned plein air painter and member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of two books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’ and ‘Plein air painting in oils’ \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. If you buy more than 2 they will be refunded and put back up for sale. \n        \n  \nMaterials \nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because even on a warm day you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too. \nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea.\nA viewfinder if you have one. \nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain. \nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you  \nhave practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it.  \nA stool if you prefer to sit. \nBasic colour palette I use on location;  \nTitanium white\nCadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake \nCadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow \nCadmium red\nAlizarin crimson \nKings blue deep\nPhthalo blue lake \nUltramarine blue \nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna/raw umber \nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a small round or two in nylon or sable. I particularly like to use Rosemary brushes’ Ivory or Eclipse ranges. \nI have a ten brush long handled set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website. \nPainting panels – any well primed boards are fine\, such as MDF panels with several coats of acrylic ‘gesso’ primer. The Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer works well. \nMy preference is for an oil primed linen canvas mounted to board\, or you can make similar with a muslin cloth and acrylic primer (see my Instagram story highlight on panel prep) \nSize wise think small and fast\, recommended sizes such as 8” x 10”\, 9” x 12”\, 10” x 10”\, 11” x 14”. \nI suggest pre-tinting the boards beforehand so that they are not stark white\, but more of a light to mid-tone warm grey. A tiny amount of burnt sienna and ultramarine mixed in with plenty of turps and rubbed all over will give you a pleasant light grey which will have a warm or cool bias depending on your mix. \nOr for a faster drying alternative mix acrylic paint colours with your acrylic primer to a suitable tint (you can’t do this if your surface is oil primed of course). \nMy essential equipment list – which all fits in a medium sized rucksack \nPochade box\nLightweight camera tripod\n2 or 4 panels in a small panel carrier\nSmall tubes of oil colour in a zip bag\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\nPalette knife\nBrushes in tube or brush roll \n\n\n\nThe famous private gardens at Court Farm:

DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nMarion is a garden historian\, planting designer\, garden tour leader and lecturer at The London College of Garden Design. \nThis tour includes Springfield House & Luggers Hall …prestigious properties on Springfield Lane in Broadway: \n\nSpringfield House: June is Springfield House gardens’ highpoint\, with over 600 varieties of Rose as well as immaculate topiary and herbaceous borders: a wealth of colour and scent awaits.\nLuggers Hall: From the tantalizing view up the rose-lined driveway\, the garden created by the artist Alfred Parsons continues to delight with sweeping lawns and rich shrub and herbaceous borders. \n\nMarion’s design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the Gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nwww.makogardens.co.uk \nNote there is an identical tour in the afternoon from 1:30-3:30pm \nTickets £20   (32 Available) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 11th March\, and 1 week earlier (4th March) for Benefactors of the festival who qualify for Priority Booking. \nYou can become a Benefactor for as little as £50 and support our Outreach Projects in doing so\, applications are now open. If you are not a 2023 Benefactor\, please do not purchase a Benefactor ticket as this ticket will be cancelled and an admin fee of £10 charged. \nPlease note: Due to the intense interest in this event (and to make it fair for all) we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to 2. This applies to benefactors of the festival and members of the general public. Successive generations have all added their horticultural mark to this large garden with its huge herbaceous border and newly planted sundial bed.\nOrchard Farm: From Royal connections to great twentieth century design\, Orchard Farm continues to be sensitively restored by the current owners\, as well as introducing new and exciting design elements\n\nMarion’s design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset.
