SUMMARY:Raku Firing Pottery Day
DESCRIPTION:Always one of our favourite weeks on The Great Pottery Throw Down\, this is your chance to experience the magic of Raku firing and glazing under expert tuition from two of our 2025 art competition finalists/ceramicists\, Richard Ballantyne and Carol Read. \nIn this 1 day Raku workshop you will learn all about and practice 3 different Raku techniques: \n\nNormal glazed Raku\nNaked Raku\nObvara\n\nSmall blank vases and bottles will be supplied ready for the Raku process\, made from clay that will withstand the high temperatures required. \nGlazed Raku \nChoose from a selection of Raku glazes to decorate your pots\, take them out of the kiln whilst still very hot and left to crackle before being put into a bucket of sawdust and sealed. You’ll then have the option to submerge your pots in water to cool quickly. \nNaked Raku \nWe will be heating the pots up in the kiln\, and then removing them at around 700 degrees before burning items such as horse hair\, feathers and sugar onto the pots to create some beautiful silhouette patterns on the white clay. \nObvara Raku \nThe pots are taken from the kiln and plunged into a yeast/flour/water mixture and then immediately into cold water producing an organic-like decorative finish with spotty or volcanic markings. \nAt the end of the day\, you will take home at least 3 of your very own finished Raku pots! \nThis workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience of ceramics. \nThe set up for firing will be outside\, so please come prepared and dressed for all weathers! Wear old clothes (natural fibres). There will be a gazebo in case of rain. We will be working on preparing and finishing the pots inside in the hall. \nThe workshop will be taking place at Willersey Village Hall\, 5 minutes drive from the village of Broadway. DESCRIPTION:Do you love the TV series Portrait Artist of the Year? Then this is for you… \nRunning alongside our famous plein air competition\, The Great Broadway Paint-Off\, we will also have a portrait painting competition taking place inside the Lifford Hall in Broadway. Amateur and professional artists from around the UK will spend the day painting the portrait of one of our ‘Broadway Legends’ from our local community\, competing for prizes. There will be approximately 4 artists per model\, the identity of which won’t be revealed until the day! \nThe painting zones will be roped off\, but the general public will be able to view the artists at work during the day from a viewing area. \nJudging will be done by the talented alla prima portrait artist Peter Keegan\, along with Festival Ambassador Margot James (former Minister for Digital & Creative Industries). \n\nPrizes:  \n\nMain prize: £300 (cash) sponsored by Helen & Hugh Munro (Trustee)\n2nd Place: A £75 voucher for Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes\n3rd Place: A Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes Peter Keegan Oils Set (RRP £59)\nVisitors’ Choice Prize (voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon): A 3 night stay at Russell Court Cottage in the grounds of Russell House in Broadway (Sleeps 6) – Note: the Visitors’ Choice Prize is shared with the main Great Broadway Paint-Off\n\nHow does it work? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy your ticket through the website well in advance (note: this event is likely to sell out weeks before).\nTurn up with your blank canvas and your kit at the Lifford Hall in the centre of the village to check in and get your blank canvas stamped & numbered on the reverse.\nSelect a pre-marked position to set up and await the arrival of your model\, who will arrive at 9am.\nSpend the day creating your masterpiece. Note we will need to give the model a short break each hour and a longer break for a bite to eat at lunch.\nComplete your portrait and hand it in at the desk when complete\, but by 2pm at the very latest. If you have used an easel\, please leave it on your easel for display in the exhibition.\nIf you would like to sell your work (we imagine the models may well be interested buyers)\, tell us the price when you hand it back in.\nThe entries will then form a selling exhibition and judged (all artists will need to leave the hall during the judging). Prize-winners will see a ribbon on their piece when the exhibition opens at 4pm.\nThe selling exhibition is then open to the public for all to enjoy from 4pm to 5pm.\nOnly artwork started and completed on the day will qualify.\nArtwork can be in any medium & any size\, however we cannot accept digital art as a medium for a number of reasons.\nWe process all artwork sales at the exhibition through our card machine and then transfer 90% of the sale price directly to your bank account in the following days. 10% of all sales are retained as commission to help cover the costs of running the competition.\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £20 \nThere are 21 tickets available for this event and they need to be purchased in advance\, by 19th May at the latest. \nParticipants will need to bring their own paper\, canvas and art supplies. SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Gardens: Mill Hay & The Court Broadway
DESCRIPTION:On this walking tour of two prestigious private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June.\n\nThis garden tour will visit 2 exclusive gardens on the Snowshill Road on the outskirts of Broadway: \n\n\n\nMill Hay  (starting point)\nThe Court\n\nThe tour will start at Mill Hay\, a Queen Anne country house set in 3 acres of landscaped grounds with a trout lake and ancient rose gardens. The grounds are adjacent to the site of a water mill dating from the 12th century. \nAfter finishing the tour at Mill Hay\, there is a short 5 minute walk to The Court (next to St Eadburgha’s Church\, which is also worth a visit). \nThe beautiful gardens at The Court were designed by landscape designer\, horticulturist and writer\, Dan Pearson\, and are set in 6 acres behind a high stone wall and bounded on one side by a very impressive topiary yew tunnel. The formal gardens include herbaceous borders\, a kitchen garden with raised beds and fruit cages\, a parterre and a large lawn leading down to the brook and the fields and wildlife lake beyond. Other areas are planted with ornamental willows and wild flowers. \nMarion Mako will be leading the tours and is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. DESCRIPTION:On this walking tour of two prestigious private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThis garden tour will visit 2 exclusive gardens on the Snowshill Road on the outskirts of Broadway: \n\n\n\nMill Hay  (starting point)\nThe Court\n\nThe tour will start at Mill Hay\, a Queen Anne country house set in 3 acres of landscaped grounds with a trout lake and ancient rose gardens. The grounds are adjacent to the site of a water mill dating from the 12th century. \nAfter finishing the tour at Mill Hay\, there is a short 5 minute walk to The Court (next to St Eadburgha’s Church\, which is also worth a visit). \nThe beautiful gardens at The Court were designed by landscape designer\, horticulturist and writer\, Dan Pearson\, and are set in 6 acres behind a high stone wall and bounded on one side by a very impressive topiary yew tunnel. The formal gardens include herbaceous borders\, a kitchen garden with raised beds and fruit cages\, a parterre and a large lawn leading down to the brook and the fields and wildlife lake beyond. Other areas are planted with ornamental willows and wild flowers. \nMarion Mako will be leading the tours and is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. DESCRIPTION:In this plein air workshop at Cotswold Lavender\, we will be painting the lavender fields in full bloom in acrylic or oil\, looking for interesting angles and dynamic designs to create attention grabbing paintings led by tutor  Paul Talbot-Greaves RI. \nThis workshop will be full of colour\, so you will learn how to manage colour contrasts effectively\, how to capture light and shade\, and how to simplify the subject. The day will be suitable for beginner and intermediate levels with participants ideally having had some basic painting experience. You will leave with your own interpretation of the subject along with the skills and knowledge to tackle similar paintings in your own time. \nPaul has been a full-time artist and tutor for the past 30 years\, specialising in landscape painting. He is a member of the Royal Institute Of Painters In Watercolours and has won many awards including three times The Artist award at Patchings\, The Canson Award\, St Cuthberts Mill Award\, The Artist Purchase Prize\, Chaoshan Watercolour Award\, and First Prize at the 2023 Broadway Arts Festival art competition.
