SUMMARY:En Plein Air Workshop at Cotswold Lavender with Paul Talbot Greaves RI
DESCRIPTION:In this plein air workshop at Cotswold Lavender\, we will be painting the lavender fields in full bloom in acrylic or oil\, looking for interesting angles and dynamic designs to create attention grabbing paintings led by tutor  Paul Talbot-Greaves RI. \nThis workshop will be full of colour\, so you will learn how to manage colour contrasts effectively\, how to capture light and shade\, and how to simplify the subject. The day will be suitable for beginner and intermediate levels with participants ideally having had some basic painting experience. You will leave with your own interpretation of the subject along with the skills and knowledge to tackle similar paintings in your own time. \nPaul has been a full-time artist and tutor for the past 30 years\, specialising in landscape painting. He is a member of the Royal Institute Of Painters In Watercolours and has won many awards including three times The Artist award at Patchings\, The Canson Award\, St Cuthberts Mill Award\, The Artist Purchase Prize\, Chaoshan Watercolour Award\, and First Prize at the 2023 Broadway Arts Festival art competition. He regularly writes teaching articles for magazines\, has four practical art books published\, and has contributed to other books on the subject of painting. \nLimited to 15 places \nTickets £110 \nTicket price includes entry to the lavender fields and parking. \nThis event has sold out\, but you can email boxoffice@broadwayartsfestival.com and ask to be added to the waiting list. \nMaterials List \nIf using acrylic paints: \n\nThere are no specific acrylic colours\, but as a guide most paintings can be created from cadmium yellow light\, yellow ochre\, cerulean blue\, French ultramarine\, cadmium red\, alizarin crimson\, titanium white and ivory black.\nBrushes: Synthetic types\, flat brushes or hog brushes. A small range of varied sizes is best. (can also be used for oil painting)\nPainting Surface: Any preferred surface is fine\, such as Winsor Newton Acrylic Paper or similar\, Hot pressed watercolour paper\, canvas\, canvas board or pre-gessoed boards and surfaces.\nPainting Mediums: Matt medium\nOther equipment:  Water pot\, palette\, Pencil\, Eraser\, kitchen roll\, Drawing board (if painting on paper)\, cellulose sponge (household moppet type)\, masking tape\, small spray bottle\, apron or old shirt\, outdoor chair (if sitting to paint)\, Easel\, Waste bag for discarded cleaning materials.\n\nIf working with oil paints: \n\nThere are no specific oil colours\, but as a guide\, most paintings can be created from cadmium yellow light\, yellow ochre\, cerulean blue\, French ultramarine\, cadmium red\, alizarin crimson\, titanium white and ivory black. \nBrushes: A small range of varied sizes of synthetic or hog brushes (brushes for acrylic are fine to use). If you’re not used to oil\, keep the size small (maximum 14 x 11in) and buy ready primed surfaces.\nPainting Mediums: Winsor Newton Liquin medium (only a small bottle is required). No medium required for water soluble oils\nOther equipment: Odourless mineral spirits such as Sansodor or Zest it\, or water for water soluble oil. Small dipper or pot. A container with a lid for cleaning such as jam jars or oil painter’s steel colander pot. Kitchen roll or rags. Baby oil (for cleaning brushes and hands). Apron or old shirt. The stakes are high: the Monks from the Abbey are desperately seeking a living soul to resurrect their traditional Wensleydale cheese. This charming tale promises a gouda time as it immerses you in a world of ghosts\, grievances\, and glorious cheese.\nWe’ll delve into the rich history of cheese\, from its humble beginnings to its place on the most sophisticated platters\, featuring a cast of characters who are whey out there.\nExpect a cheesy plot\, a sprinkle of drama\, and plenty of fromage-tastic musical numbers.\nJoin us for a slice of the action – it’s going to be a legen-dairy Mikron show.\nIt’s time to Brie-lieve in the power of cheese! \nThis performance will take place in the exclusive private grounds of  Abbots Grange in the centre of Broadway\, just steps from the village green. DESCRIPTION:On this walking tour of two prestigious private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThis garden tour will visit 2 exclusive gardens on the Snowshill Road on the outskirts of Broadway: \n\n\n\nMill Hay  (starting point)\nThe Court\n\nThe tour will start at Mill Hay\, a Queen Anne country house set in 3 acres of landscaped grounds with a trout lake and ancient rose gardens. The grounds are adjacent to the site of a water mill dating from the 12th century. \nAfter finishing the tour at Mill Hay\, there is a short 5 minute walk to The Court (next to St Eadburgha’s Church\, which is also worth a visit). \nThe beautiful gardens at The Court were designed by landscape designer\, horticulturist and writer\, Dan Pearson\, and are set in 6 acres behind a high stone wall and bounded on one side by a very impressive topiary yew tunnel. The formal gardens include herbaceous borders\, a kitchen garden with raised beds and fruit cages\, a parterre and a large lawn leading down to the brook and the fields and wildlife lake beyond. Other areas are planted with ornamental willows and wild flowers. \nMarion Mako will be leading the tours and is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. SUMMARY:The Great Broadway Portrait Paint-Off 2026
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the TV series Portrait Artist of the Year? Then this is for you… \nRunning alongside our famous plein air competition\, The Great Broadway Paint-Off\, we will also have a portrait painting competition taking place inside the Lifford Hall in Broadway. Amateur and professional artists from around the UK will spend the day painting the portrait of one of our ‘Broadway Legends’ from our local community\, competing for prizes. There will be approximately 4 artists per model\, the identity of which won’t be revealed until the day! \nThe painting zones will be roped off\, but the general public will be able to view the artists at work during the day from a viewing area. \nJudging will be done by the talented alla prima portrait artist Peter Keegan\, along with Festival Ambassador Margot James (former Minister for Digital & Creative Industries). \n\nPrizes:  \n\nMain prize: £300 (cash) sponsored by Helen & Hugh Munro (Trustee)\n2nd Place: A £75 voucher for Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes\n3rd Place: A Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes Peter Keegan Oils Set (RRP £59)\nVisitors’ Choice Prize (voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon): A 3 night stay at Russell Court Cottage in the grounds of Russell House in Broadway (Sleeps 6) – Note: the Visitors’ Choice Prize is shared with the main Great Broadway Paint-Off\n\nHow does it work? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy your ticket through the website well in advance (note: this event is likely to sell out weeks before).\nTurn up with your blank canvas and your kit at the Lifford Hall in the centre of the village to check in and get your blank canvas stamped & numbered on the reverse.\nSelect a pre-marked position to set up and await the arrival of your model\, who will arrive at 9am.\nSpend the day creating your masterpiece. Note we will need to give the model a short break each hour and a longer break for a bite to eat at lunch.\nComplete your portrait and hand it in at the desk when complete\, but by 2:15pm at the very latest. If you have used an easel\, please leave it on your easel for display in the exhibition.\nIf you would like to sell your work (we imagine the models may well be interested buyers)\, tell us the price when you hand it back in.\nThe entries will then form a selling exhibition and judged (all artists will need to leave the hall during the judging). Prize-winners will see a ribbon on their piece when the exhibition opens at 4pm.\nThe selling exhibition is then open to the public for all to enjoy from 4pm to 5pm.\nOnly artwork started and completed on the day will qualify.\nArtwork can be in any medium & any size\, however we cannot accept digital art as a medium for a number of reasons.\nWe process all artwork sales at the exhibition through our card machine and then transfer 90% of the sale price directly to your bank account in the following days. 10% of all sales are retained as commission to help cover the costs of running the competition.\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £20 \nThere are 21 tickets available for this event and they need to be purchased in advance. \nThis event has now SOLD OUT. \nParticipants will need to bring their own paper\, canvas and art supplies. DESCRIPTION:Always one of our favourite weeks on The Great Pottery Throw Down\, this is your chance to experience the magic of Raku firing and glazing under expert tuition from two of our 2025 art competition finalists/ceramicists\, Richard Ballantyne and Carol Read. \nIn this 1 day Raku workshop you will learn all about and practice 3 different Raku techniques: \n\nNormal glazed Raku\nNaked Raku\nObvara\n\nSmall blank vases and bottles will be supplied ready for the Raku process\, made from clay that will withstand the high temperatures required. \nGlazed Raku \nChoose from a selection of Raku glazes to decorate your pots\, take them out of the kiln whilst still very hot and left to crackle before being put into a bucket of sawdust and sealed. You’ll then have the option to submerge your pots in water to cool quickly. \nNaked Raku \nWe will be heating the pots up in the kiln\, and then removing them at around 700 degrees before burning items such as horse hair\, feathers and sugar onto the pots to create some beautiful silhouette patterns on the white clay. \nObvara Raku \nThe pots are taken from the kiln and plunged into a yeast/flour/water mixture and then immediately into cold water producing an organic-like decorative finish with spotty or volcanic markings. \nAt the end of the day\, you will take home at least 3 of your very own finished Raku pots! \nThis workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience of ceramics. \nThe set up for firing will be outside\, so please come prepared and dressed for all weathers! Wear old clothes (natural fibres). There will be a gazebo in case of rain. We will be working on preparing and finishing the pots inside in the hall. \nThe workshop will be taking place at Willersey Village Hall\, 5 minutes drive from the village of Broadway. SUMMARY:The Julia & Martin Wilson Short Story Competition
DESCRIPTION:In 2020 we launched a new short story prize in addition to our art competition in order to encourage creativity during the lockdown. The prize was generously sponsored and judged by festival benefactors Julia & Martin Wilson. The competition now takes place every other year\, the next one is in 2026. \nEntries need to be a maximum of 2\,000 words with unlimited entries allowed per entrant. No theme to adhere to. \nPrizes: \nMain prize (over 16s): £800\nAges 11-16yrs: £100\nAge 10 and under: £100 \nThe 2026 competition will open for entries on 5th January\, so start working on your entries! \nThe deadline for entries is 6pm on 27th March 2026.  \nPlease do not enter any previously submitted entries as they will not qualify for consideration. \nWinners will be announced the second week of April. \nThere is a fee of £12 per entry for over 16s for the main prize of £800\, but the competition is free to enter for 16 and unders. \nVisit the Short Story Prize web page for further details. SUMMARY:Street Photography Workshop with Peter Martin
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day with professional photographer\, Peter Martin\, capturing village life and The Great Broadway Paint-Off that will be taking place in the village that day. \nEveryone has a story to tell. Some do it with words\, or music\, or art\, but this workshop is for someone who wants to tell a story with their camera. \nThe day starts with an early morning session where Peter will cover all the important elements of reportage Street Photography and how to capture the shots needed to document life… with the aim of creating a photo essay comprising of a minimum of 5 photographs. The photo essay can illustrate either the event as a whole\, or the story of one of the artists from beginning to end of the day. \nThe group will then be released into the village to spend a couple of hours capturing scenes in the village individually. \nThe group then reconvenes at 12:30 to have lunch\, share shots captured so far and obtain advice from Peter. \nAfter the lunchtime session the photographers will once again venture out into the village capturing the rest of the day and the culmination of the Paint-Off with the exhibition and announcement of prizewinners in the marquee from 4-5pm. \nThe day will conclude with a wrap up session at 5pm. The group will then have the opportunity to share their resulting work online after the editing step is complete. \nParticipants will have the chance to connect with Peter via email and phone in advance of the workshop in order to help them prepare and get the most out of the day\, discussing approaches and possibilities. \nThis workshop is open to anyone age 16 and over\, and especially useful for those working towards their Photography A level. \nWorkshop participants can spend as little or as much time as they like capturing scenes during the day. \nAbout Tutor Peter Martin: \nCanadian born Peter Martin became a professional at 16 when a photo was published on the front page of a Toronto daily newspaper. Over the last 40 years Martin has worked in over 30 countries accumulating well over 10\,000 credited assignments as both freelance and staff photographer for various newspapers\, news outlets and publications including the Montreal Gazette and the Washington Post.\nHis varied and diverse portfolio of work includes major sporting and entertainment events\, international fashion shoots\, Popes\, Presidents\, Royalty and the fall of the Berlin Wall. His work has been displayed in several solo and group exhibits and in 2008 his photograph of Terry Fox was voted #4 of the Top Ten Historical Photos That Changed Canada. In 2015 he opened his own gallery (Peter Martin Gallery) in Stow-On-The-Wold\, in the Cotswolds. \nWhat to bring: \n\nAny type of digital camera. SUMMARY:Robert Welch - Crafting a Design Legacy
DESCRIPTION:2025 marks 70 years of Robert Welch Designs. This talk will trace the evolution of design at the business\, capturing the essence of a legacy that continues to inspire. \nRobert Welch studied silversmithing at the Royal College of Art. Upon graduation in 1955\, he left London for Gloucestershire countryside where he rented a small room in a disused 18th century Silk Mill in Chipping Campden. \nSet against the backdrop of the British post-war silver revival and the push to ‘design for industry’ in Britain in the wake of the 1951 Festival of Britain\, this review will look at the aspirations\, inspirations\, key designs\, stories and pivotal moments across seven decades that led to the shift from traditional silversmithing to craft-manufacture in stainless steel. It will explore newly uncovered archival imagery and stories from the past\, offering fresh insights\, honouring a rich design heritage and showcasing why Robert Welch has developed such expertise in stainless steel design in the 21st century. \nSpeaker Charlotte Booth has been archivist at the business for over a decade. Both custodian and advocate\, she works to bring the collections and heritage of Robert Welch to life \nThis talk is part of ‘Silver Day’ kindly sponsored by The Goldsmiths’ Company \nThe ticket price for this talk includes entry to the exhibition of some of  The Pearson Silver Collection at Court Barn Museum in Chipping Campden\, a 5 minute walk from the theatre. \nThere will also be a talk in the morning on British Silver Design by John Andrew (11am-12:30pm)\, again at Cidermill Theatre\, so why not make a day of it? \nThis talk will take place at Cidermill Theatre in Chipping Campden\, home of Robert Welch. This quiet start in the English Cotswold Hills would ultimately give his name a global reach. \nHe remained true to a design ethos that prioritised economy of form and priority of function over following fashionable fads & trends\, and the outcome was a portfolio of timeless designs\, an archive which today’s company is proud to build upon. \nWith roots firmly planted\, today they are able to draw on this legacy of iconic designs and supply over 100 countries\, proudly retaining the Cotswold identity. SUMMARY:Children’s Cycle-delic Spin Painting 12:30pm
DESCRIPTION:A spin art-producing bicycle – a cross between a Rube Goldberg contraption and a Damien Hirst painting factory machine. Workshop participants add poster paint to cartridge paper mounted on a spinning platter\, producing endlessly varied colourful outcomes to take home and keep. \nChildren tend to make better spin-painters as they are fearless in their application of colour and free of self-criticism\, but all ages are welcome! Suitable for anyone aged 3 and up\, younger children will need some assistance from an adult. \nThe workshop will be led (and powered!) by art teacher Daniel Lassam-Jones: “I’ve seen hundreds of paintings created on the Cycle-Delic machine\, and no two are even slightly alike!” \nAll materials will be provided\, and a painting session takes about 10 minutes. DESCRIPTION:Learn about painting the light and capturing the essence while painting plein air in the stunning private gardens of Springfield House in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo is an internationally renowned plein air painter\, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and elected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of two books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’ and ‘Plein air painting in oils’\, as well as a Broadway Arts Festival Ambassador. \nHaidee-Jo’s work features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills\, which result in lively celebratory paintings that glow with light and sing with colour. \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. If you buy more than two tickets for this event they will be refunded (less the booking fees) and put back up for sale. \nMaterials List / What to bring: \n\nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because\, even on a warm day\, you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too.\nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea.\nA viewfinder if you have one.\nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain.\nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you have practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it. \nA stool if you prefer to sit.\n\nBasic colour palette Haidee-Jo uses on location;  \n\nTitanium white\, Cadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake\nCadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow\nCadmium red\nAlizarin crimson\nKings blue deep\nPhthalo blue lake \nUltramarine blue\nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna/raw umber\nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a small round or two in nylon or sable. I particularly like to use Rosemary brushes’ Ivory or Eclipse ranges. I have a twelve brush long handled set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website.\n\nPainting panels – any well primed boards are fine\, such as MDF panels with several coats of acrylic ‘gesso’ primer. The Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer works well. \nMy preference is for an oil primed linen canvas mounted to board\, or you can make similar with a muslin cloth and acrylic primer (see my Instagram story highlight on panel prep). \nSize wise think small and fast\, recommended sizes such as 8” x 10”\, 9” x 12”\, 10” x 10”\, 11” x 14”. \nI suggest pre-tinting the boards beforehand so that they are not stark white\, but more of a light to mid-tone warm grey. A tiny amount of burnt sienna and ultramarine mixed in with plenty of turps and rubbed all over will give you a pleasant light grey which will have a warm or cool bias depending on your mix.  \nOr for a faster drying alternative mix acrylic paint colours with your acrylic primer to a suitable tint (you can’t do this if your surface is oil primed of course). \nHaidee-Jo’s essential equipment list – which all fits in a medium sized rucksack  \n\nPochade box\nLightweight camera tripod\n2 or 4 panels in a small panel carrier\nSmall tubes of oil colour in a zip bag\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\n\n \n \n\n \nSpringfield House Gardens \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n
