SUMMARY:The Julia & Martin Wilson Short Story Competition
DESCRIPTION:In 2020 we launched a new short story prize in addition to our art competition in order to encourage creativity during the lockdown. The prize was generously sponsored and judged by festival benefactors Julia & Martin Wilson. The competition now takes place every other year\, the next one is in 2026. \nEntries need to be a maximum of 2\,000 words with unlimited entries allowed per entrant. No theme to adhere to. \nPrizes: \nMain prize (over 16s): £800\nAges 11-16yrs: £100\nAge 10 and under: £100 \nThe 2026 competition will open for entries on 5th January\, so start working on your entries! \nThe deadline for entries is 6pm on 27th March 2026.  \nPlease do not enter any previously submitted entries as they will not qualify for consideration. \nWinners will be announced the second week of April. \nThere is a fee of £12 per entry for over 16s for the main prize of £800\, but the competition is free to enter for 16 and unders. \nVisit the Short Story Prize web page for further details. DESCRIPTION:Our annual open art competition is open to any artist in any medium\, professional & amateur.\nArtists’ work that is selected for the final judging stage forms an exclusive selling exhibition of 150 works at Theatrebarn in Bretforton (15 mins drive from Broadway) from Friday 26th September – Sunday 5th October\, open daily from 11am – 4pm. Entry to the exhibition is free and there is ample free parking onsite. \nWe received 670 entries from across the UK\, and the 150 finalists and prize-winners form this exclusive selling exhibition in the beautiful buildings and grounds of Theatrebarn. \nThe exhibition is an exciting array of beautiful works in a huge range of style and to fit every budget. Perfect if you have a bare wall\, nook or windowsill and are looking for a bespoke piece of British art\, or to simply admire! \nAll the works are available to buy. If you see a piece that you would like to purchase\, please go to the sales desk and they will assist you. \nYou will have a chance to see one of our finalists at work during your visit as we have a schedule of live demonstrations for the duration of the exhibition\, 2 per day. \nBroadway Arts Festival is an arts charity\, so all the funds raised go towards their outreach projects with local schools\, bursaries for local university arts students and the next festival. \nCast your vote for Visitors’ Choice! \nWe also have a Visitors’ Choice prize. SUMMARY:The Great Broadway Portrait Paint-Off
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the TV series Portrait Artist of the Year? Then this is for you… \nNew for 2025!\nRunning alongside our famous plein air competition\, The Great Broadway Paint-Off\, this year we will also have a portrait painting competition taking place inside the main marquee on the village green. Amateur and professional artists from around the UK will spend the day painting the portrait of one of our ‘Broadway Legends’ from our local community\, competing for prizes. There will be approximately 5 artists per model\, the identity of which won’t be revealed until the day! \nThe painting zones will be roped off\, but the general public will be able to view the artists at work from a pathway down the centre of the marquee. \n\nThere are main prizes plus a visitors’ choice prize voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon. \nJudging will be done by the talented alla prima portrait artist Peter Keegan\, along with Festival Ambassador Margot James who is the former Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries. \nPrizes:  \nMain prize £300 (cash) sponsored by Alastair & Julieanne McGrigor (Trustee) \n2nd Place: An overnight stay with 3 course dinner\, full English breakfast and a round of golf at Tewkesbury Park Hotel \n3rd Place: A £75 voucher for Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes \nVisitors’ Choice Prize (voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon): A 3 night stay at Russell Court Cottage in the grounds of Russell House in Broadway (Sleeps 6) – Note: the Visitors’ Choice Prize is shared with the main Great Broadway Paint-Off \nHow does it work? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy your ticket through the website well in advance (note: this event is likely to sell out weeks before).\nTurn up with your blank canvas and your kit at the marquee on the village green in the centre of the village to check in and get your blank canvas stamped & numbered on the reverse.\nSelect a pre-marked position to set up and await the arrival of your model\, who will arrive at 10am.\nSpend the day creating your masterpiece. Note we will need to give the model a short break each hour and a longer break for a bite to eat at lunch.\nComplete your portrait and hand it in at the desk in the marquee from 2pm\, but by 3:20pm at the very latest. If you have used an easel\, please leave it on your easel for display in the exhibition.\nIf you would like to sell your work (we imagine the models may well be interested buyers)\, tell us the price when you hand it back in.\nThe entries will then form a selling exhibition and judged (all artists will need to leave the marquee during the judging). Prize-winners will see a ribbon on their piece when the exhibition opens at 4pm.\nThe selling exhibition is then open to the public for all to enjoy from 4pm to 5pm.\nOnly artwork started and completed on the day will qualify.\nArtwork can be in any medium & any size\, however we cannot accept photography or iPad art as a medium for a number of reasons.\nWe process all artwork sales at the exhibition through our card machine and then transfer 90% of the sale price directly to your bank account in the following days. 10% of all sales are retained as commission to help cover the costs of running the competition. You will receive a text if your entry sells at the exhibition.\n\n\n\n\nTickets: £20 \nThere are 25 tickets available for this event and they need to be purchased in advance\, by 30th May at the latest. \nParticipants will need to bring their own paper\, canvas and art supplies.
