SUMMARY:Painting Skyscapes in Oils with Mark Stopforth
DESCRIPTION:An introduction to Skyscapes in oils on paper using Alla Prima techniques\, relying on intuitive mark making to create emotive skyscapes. Throughout the day there will be the opportunity to experience a wide range of techniques that include washes\, blends\, stippling\, scumbling and lifting. \nContextual studies will include looking at the work of Turner\, Whistler and Caspar David Friedrich along with a host of other artists known for working in the tradition of the Sublime. \nThis workshop is for artists who have some experience of painting in oils (intermediate)\, not suitable for complete novices. \nAbout the tutor: \nMark Stopforth is an artist specialising in oils and more specifically in Alla Prima techniques. His work finds inspiration from the Romantic and the Sublime Art of the past but given a contemporary feel. Mark has exhibited work both in the UK and abroad. He is currently represented by The Paragon Gallery\, Cheltenham\, Galerie Rollin\, Rouen and Immobilium Art\, Beverly Hills. There is ample free parking onsite. \nTickets £100 (Limited to 13 places) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on Monday 26th January & 1 week earlier for benefactors of the festival who benefit from priority booking. \nMaterials List: \n\nPencil/s\nPaper: Mark recommends Fabriano Academia smooth. Cartridge paper that is smooth with a gms of 200 and above is just as good\nKitchen towel paper x 2 rolls\nWhite spirit (low odour)\nGloves (disposable)\nOil paints: Mark suggests the following colours: Prussian blue\, Cobalt blue\, Yellow ochre\, Black\, Titanium White\, Green\, Pink\, Flesh tone pink plus any others that you have\nBrushes: A small range of brushes from small to medium for detailing and blending\nBring some old brushes for stippling\nSmall bowl for white spirit\nMasking tape\n\nWould you like to buy a Broadway Arts Festival apron to wear at the workshop? DESCRIPTION:Your chance to draw or paint our beautiful Cotswolds village for the day and be in with a chance of winning great prizes along with other artists from across the UK! \nThis is a very popular event that attracts both professional and emerging artists. \nPrizes:  \n\nMain Prize: £500 (cash) sponsored by Alastair & Julieanne McGrigor (Trustee)\n2nd Place: An overnight stay with 3 course dinner\, full English breakfast and a round of golf at Tewkesbury Park Hotel\n3rd Place: £150 voucher for Jackson’s Art Supplies\n4th Place: £150 voucher towards framing from E7 Framing\n5th Place: A £100 voucher for Rosemary & Co Artist Brushes\n6th Place: £50 voucher for Jackson’s Art Supplies\nVisitors’ Choice Prize (voted on by visitors to the free exhibition of entries at the end of the afternoon): A 3 night stay at Russell Court Cottage in the grounds of Russell House in Broadway (Sleeps 6) Note: the Visitors’ Choice Prize is shared with The Great Broadway Portrait Paint-Off\n\n\nJudges in 2026 will include our Festival Artist in Residence\, Claire Henley and Festival Ambassador Tushar Sabale who will walk the village to chat with the artists during the day. \nNOTE: we will also be holding a separate Portrait Paint-Off at the Lifford Hall during the day for those who prefer painting people rather than en plein air! \n\n\nHow does it work? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBuy your ticket through the website well in advance and before 15th May. Note: You can only buy a ticket for yourself\, not multiples for friends.\nTurn up with your blank canvas and your kit at the gazebo on the village green in the centre of the village in the time slot you selected to check in and get your canvas stamped & numbered on the reverse.\nSpend the day creating your masterpiece at your chosen location in or around the village (you can paint up at Broadway Tower too).\nGet your work of art back to the Lifford Hall anytime from 2pm\, but by 3:30pm at the very latest when the doors will close for judging.\nIf you have used an easel\, please leave it on your easel for display in the exhibition.\nIf you would like to sell your work\, have the price ready to provide to us when you hand it back in.\nThe entries will then form a selling exhibition and be judged. Prize-winners will see a ribbon on their piece when the exhibition opens at 4pm.\nThe selling exhibition is then open to the public for all to enjoy from 4pm to 5pm.\nThe winner of the Visitors’ Choice Prize will be announced at 4:45pm\nOnly artwork started and completed on the day will qualify.\nArtwork can be in any medium & any size\, however we cannot accept photography or iPad art as a medium for a number of reasons.\nWe process all artwork sales at the exhibition through our card machine and then transfer 90% of the sale price directly to your bank account in the following days. 10% of all sales are retained as commission to help cover the costs of running the competition.
