SUMMARY:How not to be a Starving Artist with Claire Henley
DESCRIPTION:An informal talk about surviving as a professional artist. Freelance for 36 years\, Claire Henley has illustrated such diverse things as margarine tubs and children’s books before becoming a fine artist 15 years ago.  \nTopics will include finding your tribe\, being organised\, showing and selling your work\, galleries\, social media\, multiple income streams\, licensing\, talks and demonstrations and\, finally\, your questions. \nAlthough the emphasis will be on making money from your art\, hobby artists should learn a lot too. Since there’s no magic formula\, Claire will simply be talking about things that have worked for her\, things that didn’t really come off\, and things that were a total disaster!  \nThere will be a Q&A session at the end of the talk. Ticket-holders will be able to submit their questions in advance via email. \nThere will be a pop up shop of Claire’s work\, cards\, etc to enjoy at the end of the event. \nTickets  £18

SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Gardens: Russell House & Abbots Grange
DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century\, and continue this theme today. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nRussell House (starting point)\nAbbots Grange\n\nThe tour will start at Russell House which was the home of the Broadway Art Colony in the 1880’s\, and was the setting for Sargent’s Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose which now hangs in the Tate in London; a beautiful one acre garden including gothic tower\, gazebo and ice-house. \nThe tour will then continue on to Abbots Grange\, a short walk away\, the grounds of which used to be connected by a garden gate during the arts colony and Sargent years. \nSat in over 8 acres of parkland grounds\, Abbots Grange is the oldest dwelling in Broadway and one of the oldest domestic/monastic properties in the UK\, built during the early part of the 14th Century. It is considered by the Institute of Archaeology to be one of the most important and best preserved English monastic manor houses\, and has a rich and fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1880’s by designer William Morris and then the American Frank Millet and became a sanctuary for some of the greatest names in European and American culture in the 1880’s. \nMarion Mako is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nwww.makogardens.co.uk \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. If you buy more than two tickets for this event they will be refunded (less the booking fees) and put back up for sale. \nPlease use the public car parks in Broadway. \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nRussell House Gardens \n\n \n  \nAbbotts Grange \n

They’ll cover his early years and relationship with music growing up\, the accident that ultimately led to the birth of metal\, early influences\, the formation of Black Sabbath\, tales from the road and the very first Heavy Metal ballet experience… There will be a Q&A session at the end\, ticket-holders will be given the opportunity to submit questions in advance. \nAbout Tony Iommi:\n\nBirmingham’s Tony Iommi co-founded the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath\, and is the band’s guitarist\, leader\, primary composer\, and sole continuous member for over five decades. Born and brought up in Hertfordshire\, he has spent more than half his life living and working in the West Midlands. He is perhaps best known for his enduring on air partnership with Anne Diamond\, both in the 1980s at the dawn of breakfast television and in the 1990s when they hosted Good Morning with Anne and Nick together. Nick also spent some years in the 80s and early 90s as ITV Sport’s main presenter with his regular show\, Midweek Sport Special. During this time\, he also anchored the Olympic Games of 1988 and the World Cup of 1990. He has presented BBC Midlands Today since 1997. SUMMARY:2 Day Watercolour Masterclass with Hazel Soan: Figures & Flowers
DESCRIPTION:This 2 day masterclass explores watercolour’s wet into wet blending technique with renowned artist Hazel Soan. The workshop is geared to an intermediary level of skill but both an adventurous beginner and a seasoned professional would doubtless enjoy the experience as watercolour reveals its wonders! \nWe will use two different subjects\, figures and flowers\, both of which are subjects that benefit from the organic liveliness that wet into wet blending allows in painting. The soft blending that the wet into wet technique enables\, means the watercolourist can make paintings feel more like what we see and enjoy at first sight. Rich blends\, soft edges\, lost and found passages of colour\, description without unnecessary definition\, a suggestion of movement\, a hint of time – all these aspects create life in a painting. \nThe first day’s workshop concentrates on painting figures\, possibly in a cafe setting\, and will be a hall based masterclass exploring the use of wet into wet watercolour blending to enhance the suggestion of liveliness and movement. We will work from reference photographs. The first day will take place in the Lifford Hall in central Broadway. \nThe second day’s workshop explores the use of wet into wet blending for representing the organic nature of flowers in the spectacular private gardens of Springfield House in Broadway. We will start with individual blooms and then paint a wider scene\, but as we are painting from life\, specific subjects will only be determined on the day dependent on the weather\, the light and the flowers blooming around us. \nTickets £220 – limited to 15 places \n(Includes a light lunch on the second day) \nTickets will be going on sale to the public at 10am on Friday 26th January 2024\, and 1 week earlier for festival benefactors.\nDo consider becoming a Benefactor (for as little as £50) to secure priority booking for all our 2024 events. Benefactor applications are now open.\nAbout the tutor: \nHazel Soan is a British artist working out of studios in London and Cape Town and on location throughout the world. Her work is represented in private and public collections worldwide\, including the National Portrait Gallery and the Ritz. Hazel has held numerous solo exhibitions\, mainly in London and the UK\, but also in Venezuela\, Namibia and Zimbabwe. She has participated in mixed exhibitions\, including Royal Academy\, Barbican Centre\, Midland Open\, Mall Galleries\, and David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.\nHazel is a natural and talented communicator and became popular for her television role as an Art Expert on Channel 4’s Watercolour Challenge and her own series\, Anglia TV’s Splash of Colour.\nHer passion for painting is shared through books\, DVD films\, workshops\, lectures and painting holidays\, demonstrating the vibrant immediacy of the watercolour medium and the properties of watercolour pigments. She is the author of more than 20 books and contributes articles regularly to The Artist magazine and other art titles. \nMaterials List: \nPAPER 100% cotton paper – eg Saunders Waterford\, Arches\, Khadi  – rough surface 140lb+ in sketchblocks\, or loose sheets and drawing board. SUMMARY:2 Day En Plein Air Painting Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to practice plein air painting in oils or acrylics with acclaimed artist Haidee-Jo Summers\, in one of the most exclusive private gardens in Broadway. \nLearn about capturing the essence while plein air painting in the incredible garden setting of Court Farm on the famous Upper High Street in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo is an internationally renowned plein air painter and member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of two books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’ and ‘Plein air painting in oils’ \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. Haidee-Jo will be working with oil paints but acrylics can be used if preferred. \nTo find out more about Haidee-Jo visit: www.haideejo.co \nTickets £220  (15 available) \nHaidee-Jo will also be doing a demonstration on the afternoon of Saturday 10th June from 2-4pm at the Lifford Hall in Broadway (150 tickets available) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 11th March\, and 1 week earlier (4th March) for Benefactors of the festival who qualify for Priority Booking. Note: this event in 2021 sold out in the first hour! \nYou can become a Benefactor for as little as £50 and support our Outreach Projects in doing so\, applications are now open. \nIf you are not a 2023 Benefactor\, please do not purchase a Benefactor ticket as this ticket will be cancelled and an admin fee of £10 charged. \nPlease note: Due to the intense interest in this workshop (and to make it fair for all) we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to 2. This applies to benefactors of the festival and members of the general public. If you buy more than 2 they will be refunded and put back up for sale. \n        \n  \nMaterials \nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because even on a warm day you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too. \nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea.\nA viewfinder if you have one. \nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain. \nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you  \nhave practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it.  \nA stool if you prefer to sit. \nBasic colour palette I use on location;  \nTitanium white\nCadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake \nCadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow \nCadmium red\nAlizarin crimson \nKings blue deep\nPhthalo blue lake \nUltramarine blue \nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna/raw umber \nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a small round or two in nylon or sable. I particularly like to use Rosemary brushes’ Ivory or Eclipse ranges. \nI have a ten brush long handled set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website. \nPainting panels – any well primed boards are fine\, such as MDF panels with several coats of acrylic ‘gesso’ primer. The Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer works well. \nMy preference is for an oil primed linen canvas mounted to board\, or you can make similar with a muslin cloth and acrylic primer (see my Instagram story highlight on panel prep) \nSize wise think small and fast\, recommended sizes such as 8” x 10”\, 9” x 12”\, 10” x 10”\, 11” x 14”. \nI suggest pre-tinting the boards beforehand so that they are not stark white\, but more of a light to mid-tone warm grey. A tiny amount of burnt sienna and ultramarine mixed in with plenty of turps and rubbed all over will give you a pleasant light grey which will have a warm or cool bias depending on your mix. \nOr for a faster drying alternative mix acrylic paint colours with your acrylic primer to a suitable tint (you can’t do this if your surface is oil primed of course). \nMy essential equipment list – which all fits in a medium sized rucksack \nPochade box\nLightweight camera tripod\n2 or 4 panels in a small panel carrier\nSmall tubes of oil colour in a zip bag\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\nPalette knife\nBrushes in tube or brush roll \n\n\n\nThe famous private gardens at Court Farm:

SUMMARY:Portrait Painting in Oils: Demonstration by Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:Watch contemporary impressionist artist Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA\, paint a complete portrait from start to finish from a live model.  \nHaidee-Jo strives for simplicity and economy in her work\, and she will show you how she makes every mark count.  \nRichard Cornwall was the winner of ‘Best Beard in Broadway‘ and will be Haidee-Jo’s model for the afternoon! \nThis event will be taking place in the Lifford Hall in Broadway. \nTickets £17 \nAbout Haidee-Jo Summers: \nHaidee-Jo is a full-time professional artist best known for painting ‘en plein air’. An elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters (ROI) and the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) her work can be seen each year at the Mall Galleries in London in these prestigious society exhibitions. Haidee-Jo writes regularly for The Artist magazine and is proud to be an editorial consultant alongside David Curtis ROI RSMA. Her first book on oil painting\, ‘Vibrant Oils’ (published by Search Press)\, has been reprinted in Spanish\, Italian\, French and Chinese. Her second book\, Plein air painting in oils\, has been released in spring 2022 and is already reprinted in Russian. She has produced two popular DVDs with APV films. Although oils are very much her preferred medium\, in the 1990’s Haidee-Jo produced a large body of work for the Encyclopaedia of Watercolour Techniques and is an avid sketcher. In recent years she has been invited to judge UK and international plein air events\, after winning many prizes for her work which features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills. \nHaidee-Jo gained a degree in illustration following an art foundation course and graduated in 1994. She has been exhibiting and teaching ever since\, in recent years having cut back on teaching commitments to focus on painting and writing. She believes very much in continuing to grow and develop\, all the while striving to express her personal voice in paint and to do so more and more succinctly. \n‘My work is a celebration of light filled moments revealed in rich and vibrant oil paint using my personal visual language of fresh and direct brushmarks. Painting en plein air is central to my practice but I am equally at home working from a model\, still life or interior. I find beauty in the ordinary\, mundane and intimate rather than the grand vista. Coastal locations\, domestic interiors and gardens and allotments provide me with rich and endless subject material. \nMy approach is one of simplicity and economy\, striving to make every mark count in my earnest pursuance of capturing the poetry of a fleeting effect of light.’ \nVisit www.haideejo.com \n
