DESCRIPTION:Spend the day painting in the grounds and art room at Stanton Guildhouse with David Pilgrim ROI. \nLearn how to paint in a more direct and painterly way using gouache paints to achieve fresh and lively results. We will delve into some of the unique properties that this versatile medium has to offer and work both from studio reference along with local subjects based at the wonderful Stanton Guildhouse.  \nThe emphasis will be on simplifying the painting process\, considering key design elements and discarding unnecessary detail in order to create work with more energy and conviction. David will provide demonstrations of his working methods and techniques using gouache whilst also offering lots of helpful advice\, tips and guidance throughout the day. \nAimed at those with some experience of painting (in any medium)\, you’ll be encouraged to paint decisively and with clear intentions\, balancing looseness with control in order to capture the very essence of your subjects with gouache. \nDavid Pilgrim (ROI) is an award-winning professional artist with passion for painting\, predominantly using oils and also gouache. SUMMARY:2 Day En Plein Air Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers VPROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:Learn about painting the light and capturing the essence while painting plein air in the stunning exclusive gardens of The Orchard Farm on the upper high street in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo Summers is an internationally renowned plein air painter\, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and elected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of three books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’\, ‘Plein air painting in oils’ and ’50 ways to break the rules in oils’\, as well as a Broadway Arts Festival Ambassador. \nHaidee-Jo’s work features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills\, which result in lively celebratory paintings that glow with light and sing with colour. \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. Haidee-Jo will be working with oil paints\, but acrylics or gouache can be used if preferred. \n“I’ve been working – and living – as an artist for well over thirty years\, with a particular focus on plein air painting since 2010. Oils and gouache are my preferred mediums\, and I also sketch with pencil as much as I can. What I’m aiming for in my work is to be able to communicate what inspired me about the subject\, as succinctly as possible\, and to do so with feeling. I am endlessly fascinated by the path we walk between the illusion of the three dimensional world and the materiality of the paint marks on a two dimensional surface. When a group of artists stands before the same subject\, they notice such different things about it. We each have our own visual preferences\, our own sense of colour\, our own biases regarding what makes a great painting or subject material. What we all have\, is discernment\, and this is what makes us special. We don’t just record\, we filter through the lens of our experience and vision. Whereas a camera records indiscriminately\, the impressionist painter wants to show you something special\, something that they’ve noticed and that moved them. \nI believe that success in painting comes down to three things – learning to see as an artist (the painters eye)\, having something to say (finding your own voice) and perseverance (putting in the brush miles).  During this workshop I’m going to be sharing my joy and inspiration with you and helping you in any way that I can.” \nTickets £275 (15 Places) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 15th March and 1 week earlier for benefactors of the festival who qualify for priority booking. \nMaterials List: \n\n\n\nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you have practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it. \nA stool if you prefer to sit\nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because\, even on a warm day\, you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too.\nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea\nA viewfinder if you have one\nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain\n\nBasic colour palette Haidee-Jo uses on location;  \n\nTitanium white\nCadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake\nCadmium yellow deep and/or cadmium orange\nCadmium red light\nAlizarin crimson or permanent rose\nPhthalo blue plus titanium white (Michael Harding oil colour)\nUltramarine blue or cobalt blue\nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nLavender (Michael Harding oil colour)\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna\nRaw umber\nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a couple of small rounds in nylon or sable. I have a long handled brush set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website.\n\nPainting panels – 4 – 6 well primed boards  \nRecommended sizes small to medium eg 10” x 12”\, 12” x 16” \nOther recommended equipment  \n\n\n\nPanel carrier to carry wet paintings\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\nA plastic bag for rubbish\nHand wipes\nPalette knife\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Orchard Farm\n  \n \n  \n \n  \n \nHaidee-Jo Summers VPROI RSMA \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:How not to be a Starving Artist with Claire Henley
DESCRIPTION:An informal talk about surviving as a professional artist. \nFreelance for 38 years\, Claire Henley has illustrated such diverse things as margarine tubs and children’s books before becoming a fine artist 16 years ago. She is the current Artist in Residence at Broadway Arts Festival.   \nDuring the talk\, topics will include finding your tribe\, being organised\, showing and selling your work\, galleries\, social media\, multiple income streams\, licensing\, talks and demonstrations and\, finally\, your questions.\nAlthough the emphasis will be on making money from your art\, hobby artists should learn a lot too. Since there’s no magic formula\, Claire will simply be talking about things that have worked for her\, things that didn’t really come off\, and things that were a total disaster! \nThere will be a Q&A session at the end of the talk and a pop-up shop of Claire’s work\, cards\, etc to enjoy. \nTickets  £20 (50 places) go on sale to the general public at 10am on 15th March\, and 1 week earlier to festival benefactors who benefit from priority booking. \n

SUMMARY:Royal Patrons & Collectors in the 20th Century: from King Edward VII to Queen Elizabeth II
DESCRIPTION: Tim Knox\, Director of the Royal Collection\, explores the taste and patronage of successive British monarchs over the last century\, from King Edward VII to Queen Elizabeth II. \nWith its political\, social and economic turbulence\, two World Wars and the loss of an Empire\, the twentieth century has not provided ideal conditions for the growth and development of the British Royal Collection. Indeed\, it is something of a miracle that it has survived intact at all! \nHe starts his survey with King Edward VII\, who by his own admission\, knew little about art\, but a lot about ‘ARRRangement’. During his brief reign he dismantled his mother’s frowsty Victorian legacy under a flurry of white and gold dècors. George V collected postage stamps\, while his consort\, Queen Mary\, had an informed passion for fine things\, from Fabergé to Chinese jades\, with a particular penchant for objects with family connections. Queen Elizabeth\, the wife of George VI\, assembled a distinguished group of modern pictures\, including works by Sickert and Monet\, while Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had understated tastes\, preferring racehorses and dogs to art. Yet\, during her long reign\, Queen Elizabeth founded the Royal Collection Trust\, to look after her collections\, and shared them with a liberality that rivals any national museum. Charting the peaks and troughs of Royal patronage during the twentieth century\, Tim Knox shows how the Royal Collection has not only survived\, but flourished in unexpected ways.\nTickets £20 \nTickets will go on sale to the general public on 15th March and 1 week earlier to benefactors of the festival who qualify for priority booking. \nAbout Tim Knox: \nTim Knox was appointed the Director of the Royal Collection by Queen Elizabeth II in 2018. Previous to that he was successively Director and Marlay Curator of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and Director of Sir John Soane’s Museum in London.       \nThis event will be taking place at The Henrician Theatre at Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham. The theatre has ample free parking and air conditioning. \nThis talk is kindly sponsored by Art Broadway. \nSpeaker Tim Knox
