SUMMARY:‘Unlawful Killings & Rough Justice’ - Tales from the bench by Wendy Joseph KC
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC seeks to answer: \nDo we have the law we deserve?\nHas justice improved for the victim\, the accused and society?\nWhat even is justice? \nDescribed as a ‘natural storyteller’ by The Times and based on the book which was described by Lady Hale as ‘compelling’\, this talk is given by a former judge of which Cherie Blair stated\, “If ever I was on trial I would want my judge to be this one.” Hot on the heels of her Sunday Times bestseller ‘Unlawful Killings’\, Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC skilfully reconstructs four courtroom dramas\, drawing on her many years’ experience as a murder judge to ask whether our justice system works\, and if it has improved over the centuries. Have we got any better at delivering what is right and fair to both the perpetrators and the victims of society’s most heinous crimes? \nFrom the trial of a child charged with disposing of dismembered body parts\, to the woman accused of killing her own husband\, Joseph is utterly compelling as she sets out how the system works. But\, as she compares these modern courtroom tales with eerily similar cases and miscarriages of justice from years ago\, might the most chilling story of all be that the lessons of the past have yet to be learned? \nThis talk illuminates the struggles of any one of us caught up in our legal system – but particularly the marginalized and the easily exploited – and grapples with the concept of ‘justice for all’ so that we might demand better. \nUntil March 2022 Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC was a judge at the Old Bailey\, sitting on criminal cases\, trying mainly allegations of murder and other homicide. When she moved to the Old Bailey in 2012 she was the only woman amongst sixteen judges\, and only the third woman ever to hold a permanent position there. She was also a Diversity and Community Relations Judge\, working to promote understanding between the judiciary and many different sectors of our community\, particularly those from less privileged and minority groups. She mentors young people\, from a variety of backgrounds\, who hope for a career in law and has a special interest in helping women. \nThere will be a Q&A Session at the end of the talk. Ticket-holders will be able to submit questions by email in advance.  There will be a book-signing after the talk for those who have pre-ordered copies of her books. \nThis talk will take place at Cidermill Theatre in Chipping Campden\, 10 mins drive from Broadway where there is ample parking. \nTickets £20 \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Silver Clay Earrings Jewellery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Jo Richards of Faye Benjamin Jewellery for an introduction to Silver Clay workshop making your very own stunning solid silver drop earrings over the course of 3 hours. Jo has over 25 years of experience designing and creating jewellery. \nSilver Clay can be cut\, shaped and textured with ease – a wonderful way to create your very own unique jewellery. \nSuitable for complete beginners\, you will work at a relaxed pace with time to ask questions along the way. \nYour earrings will be fired and finished during the session so you can wear your creation home with pride! \nWhat is Silver Clay \nSilver Clay is made up of recycled pure silver particles bound together with water and a non-toxic organic binder. It can be moulded\, shaped\, pressed\, stamped and cut. When the piece is finished\, it’s dried thoroughly and fired with a blow torch or in a kiln. During firing\, the organic binder burns away leaving the silver particles to fuse into solid silver. \nNot only is Silver Clay created from recycled silver\, it’s also fabulously versatile and truly beautiful. Being 99.9% Fine Silver (Sterling Silver is only 92.5%) means the piece will be of a higher silver content\, less liable to tarnishing and when turned into a unique handmade piece\, just that little bit more precious… \nCome along with a friend and spend an afternoon learning a new skill and walk away with a beautiful memento of your day. \nAll materials and tools will be provided\, including sterling silver ear wires. \nPlease wear sturdy shoes. \nTickets £75  (10 Places) \n

SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Gardens: Russell House & Abbots Grange
DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century\, and continue this theme today. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nRussell House (starting point)\nAbbots Grange\n\nThe tour will start at Russell House which was the home of the Broadway Art Colony in the 1880’s\, and was the setting for Sargent’s Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose which now hangs in the Tate in London; a beautiful one acre garden including gothic tower\, gazebo and ice-house. \nThe tour will then continue on to Abbots Grange\, a short walk away\, the grounds of which used to be connected by a garden gate during the arts colony and Sargent years. \nSat in over 8 acres of parkland grounds\, Abbots Grange is the oldest dwelling in Broadway and one of the oldest domestic/monastic properties in the UK\, built during the early part of the 14th Century. It is considered by the Institute of Archaeology to be one of the most important and best preserved English monastic manor houses\, and has a rich and fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1880’s by designer William Morris and then the American Frank Millet and became a sanctuary for some of the greatest names in European and American culture in the 1880’s. \nMarion Mako is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nwww.makogardens.co.uk \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. SUMMARY:Silver Clay Pendant Jewellery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Jo Richards of Faye Benjamin Jewellery for an introduction to Silver Clay workshop making your very own stunning solid silver pendant over the course of 3 hours. \nYour pendant will be fired and finished during the session so you can wear your creation home with pride! \nAll materials and tools will be provided. \nPlease wear sturdy shoes. \nTickets £75  (10 Places) \n

SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Gardens: Tower Close Snowshill & The Court Broadway

Our friends at Snowshill Manor (National Trust) have agreed that our garden tour ticket holders can use their overflow car park (free) for the duration of the tour. Do consider a tour of the Manor before your garden tour with us; we’d recommend it! \nTower Close has striking views of the Malvern Hills from this 3 acre Cotswold garden positioned at the top of the charming village of Snowshill. Featured in Country Life\, the C17 Grade II listed house is surrounded by terraces of garden rooms. Herbaceous borders\, espaliered fruit trees and sunken vegetable garden. Plants tumble down the terraces to a romantic stream\, ponds\, garden features\, orchard and meadow. \nAfter finishing the tour at Tower Close\, please return to your vehicles and make the short drive to The Court on the Snowshill road on the outskirts of Broadway (next to St Eadburgha’s Church\, which is also worth a visit). \nThe beautiful gardens at The Court were designed by landscape designer\, horticulturist and writer\, Dan Pearson\, and are set in 6 acres behind a high stone wall and bounded on one side by a very impressive topiary yew tunnel. The formal gardens include glorious herbaceous borders\, a kitchen garden with raised beds and fruit cages\, a parterre and a large lawn leading down to the brook and the fields and wildlife lake beyond. Other areas are planted with ornamental willows and wild flowers. \nNote this garden tour is not suitable for those in wheelchairs or with limited mobility due to many steps and gravel paths. However should you wish to just sit and enjoy the views this would be fine! \nMarion Mako will be leading the tours and is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. SUMMARY:En Plein Air Painting in Watercolour with Bobby Open
DESCRIPTION:An exciting opportunity to paint in a beautiful private garden on the Upper High Street in Broadway.  True to its name\, The Hill is a classic Cotswold stone house nestled in a hillside garden with topiary\, mature trees and summerhouses\, and fabulous views to Bredon Hill and the Malverns.  Participants will be painting outdoors with the aim of capturing aspects of the garden in vibrant and expressive watercolour.   \nBobby Open won the Great Broadway Paint Off in 2023 and paints in watercolour. \nThe day will include demonstrations of useful techniques and approaches to working outdoors in watercolour.  There will be plenty of time for participants to explore the garden and paint fragments and views that catch their eye\, particularly looking at how nature relates to more formal elements.   \nSuitable for those with experience of painting in watercolour. \nBobby’s paintings can be seen on Instagram at www.instagram.com/bobbyopen \nTickets £100 (15 Places) \nMATERIALS LIST \nThe materials listed below are only a general guide based on what I use.  Painting materials can be expensive and\, whilst the quality of materials tends to be reflected in the quality of one’s paintings\, suggestions about materials will be given during the workshop so if in doubt just bring whatever materials you already have and do not rush into buying more. \nBRUSHES \nI mainly use pointed round pure Kolinsky sable brushes (sometimes called designer round).  Typically\, in the studio\, I use da Vinci series 35; outdoors\, I use Escoda Reserva\, Isabey or Rosemary & Co travel brushes\, because the handle protects the brush when travelling.  I tend to use brush sizes 4\, 6\, 8\, 10 and 12.  If I had to choose only one\, it would be a versatile size 7 or 8. \nPAINTS \nI use artists’ quality paint from tubes\, squeezed into pans in a watercolour paint box.  It is essential that the tip of the brush can pick up wet paint: if the paint is too hard\, brush tips become worn and the paint will be less vibrant.  A small plastic spray bottle can be useful to keep paints moist.  Matchsticks or toothpicks are also useful to stir up paint. \nThere are different types of paint box.  Frank Herring makes a good\, affordable plastic paint box.  There are also enameled metal boxes\, including aluminium\, steel and brass: aluminium and brass tend to be more durable (steel boxes eventually rust). \n\nMy full colour palette includes a range of blues\, reds\, yellows and earth colours.  I use Holbein Artists’ Watercolour tubes (H) and Winsor and Newton Professional (W&N).  The colours I’ve underlined are the ones I use most outdoors:\nBlues: Cerulean Blue (H); Cobalt Blue; Ultramarine Blue Deep (H) or French Ultramarine (W&N).\nViolets: Cobalt Violet (H); Ultramarine Violet (W&N); Mineral Violet (H).\nReds: Carmine (H); Cadmium Red Deep (H) or Cadmium Red (W&N).\nYellows: New Gamboge (H); Cadmium Yellow Pale (H); Cadmium Yellow Light (H); Cadmium Yellow Deep (H); Cadmium Orange (W&N).\nEarth Colours and Greens: Yellow Ochre (H); Raw Umber; Burnt Sienna; Burnt Umber; Viridian.\nOccasional Colours: Ivory Black; Jaune Brilliant (H); Lavender (H); other greens such as Cobalt\, Turquoise\, Olive\, Oxide of Chromium and Perylene.\n\nPAPER \n\nI typically use 140lb Fabriano Artistico extra white cold pressed 100% cotton acid-free paper.  Sheets cut into half or quarter are usually more cost effective than blocks.  Saunders Waterford and Arches are also good options.\nA sketchbook can be useful for making notes and quick compositional sketches.\n\nOTHER ITEMS \nI use a Pentel 0.9mm B mechanical pencil; a Faber Castell foldable water pot; metal clips or masking tape to hold paper to a sheet of foamboard or cardboard; kitchen paper and a sponge.  Erasers are banned!  (Not really\, but a soft putty eraser will help to protect the paper surface).  A bottle of water.  Penknife. \nA cap or rimmed hat is useful to limit glare.  If you prefer to sit\, a folding chair or stool may be handy.  A folding easel will be necessary unless you are happy working in your lap.  Please dress for the weather and bring sunscreen/bug spray as appropriate! \nThe Hill\n \n  \n \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Whispers and Melodies' Recital - Soprano Rose Johnson & Jamie Salters on Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Whispers and Melodies\, an intimate recital exploring the delicate interplay between soprano and clarinet. Featuring Louis Sphor’s 6 Deutsche Lieder\, Schubert’s lyrical The Shepherd on the Rock\, and a new commission by Jeremy Clay\, this program celebrates both the timeless beauty of classical song and the expressive possibilities of the clarinet in creating unforgettable musical moments. \nRose Johnson is a soprano from Broadway\, now embarking on a professional career after receiving bursary support from Broadway Arts Festival during her studies. She will be accompanied by Jamie Salters on Clarinet. \nHer recital shows her remarkable talent in a classical programme\, in the stunning setting of the music room at Court Farm\, at the top of Broadway High Street. \nThere will be a short interval \nNote there is a second Soprano recital starting at 11:30am the same day and guests are invited to enjoy the beautiful private gardens at Court Farm with a picnic\, if attending both. \nTickets £18 \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nRose Johnson \nRose Johnson is a Soprano based in Birmingham and West Midlands.
