SUMMARY:Expressive Landscapes with Rachel Cronin: 3 Day Abstract Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This 3 day workshop will help you loosen up and create expressive and bold landscapes using the beautiful surroundings of Stanton Guildhouse as inspiration working with landscape artist\, Rachel Cronin. \nThe aim of this course is to help you free yourselves from the need to create representational work in order to create work that expresses how you feel instead. If you have been wanting to let go of accuracy and loosen up then this is for you. Rachel will show you how to work across multiple pieces so that if you get stuck on one painting\, you can move on to the next. This will help you to view your work with more objectivity and less judgement as you return to it multiple times across the weekend. The focus will be less on creating finished paintings and more on helping you build a toolkit of techniques and approaches so that you can add these to your own creative practice. \nThere will be plenty of demonstrations so that you can see how to mix paint of the right consistency and colour for your work\, and you will also have the opportunity to experiment with creating texture by scraping and sanding back paint\, using glaze mediums and texture paste\, as well as using thick and thin paint. You will spend time exploring both soft and hard edges by pushing and dragging paint\, using cloths to smudge out colour and masking off with tape to create strong contrast. All students will receive help and guidance throughout the workshop\, with individual tuition throughout to help you establish your personal creative motivations. \nWe will use the Art Room at Stanton Guildhouse as our base but you can expect to be outside in the beautiful grounds at Stanton Guildhouse with its far reaching views from the Cotswold escarpment. \nPlease note that the Art Room is not wheelchair accessible and is up a series of steep\, external steps. For more information about access\, please email workshops@broadwayartsfestival.com \nThis workshop is for those with some experience of painting. \nLight lunch will be provided on day 2 & 3\, please bring a lunch with you for the first day. \nTickets £390 (12 Places) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nNOTE: There is beautiful onsite accommodation available to book at Stanton Guildhouse – email info@broadwayartsfestival.com to enquire/book. \n  \nDay One: \nOn day one we will gather information from our surroundings whilst using expressive drawing techniques like blind contour and non-dominant hand drawing. You will also be encouraged to stay present to whatever the landscape is showing you and explore how these responses inform your marks and lines. After some initial warm up sketches\, we will move onto using viewfinders to create thumbnail sketches. This will help you to observe and understand the underlying structure of the landscape and see how different elements like fields\, hedgerows\, trees and houses are arranged on the picture plane. We will then take these sketches and create several slightly bigger painted versions that allow us to begin to explore brush marks and a limited colour palette. We will work with only a selected number of actual marks so you will be able to work towards looseness and observe that even a small scale up will change the way you make marks.  \nDay Two: \nOn day two we will scale up further still and begin to look at paint application\, transitions and the principles of contrast. We will take a couple of our sketches and use them as inspiration for some larger pieces of work where we explore brush-craft and paint application in more detail. We will experiment with a selection of tools to create texture and variation within our painted surface such as wire brushes\, soft rags\, masking tape\, palette knives\, silicone scrapers and cut-up credit cards. As the day progresses\, we will begin to introduce different acrylic paint mediums such as texture paste and glaze medium.  \nDay Three: \nHaving spent two days using a limited colour palette\, day three will be spent exploring different types of colour groupings. We will explore bright\, saturated colours as well as desaturated\, neutral colours and you will be able to create new work using a different type of colour story. We will also explore composition in more detail\, referring back to our thumbnail sketches to help us create focus and contrast. The last day will draw to a close with a celebration of your work and a chance to share your experiences. \n\nYou will need to bring:\n\n\n\nA portable sketching kit to include:\nA sketchbook (it doesn’t matter what size but you will need to carry it around!)\nA selection of pencils\, charcoal\, a rubber and a sharpener\nA brush pen\n\nDry media such as colour pencils\, crayons and pastels if you have them\n\nYour acrylic paints to include Lemon Yellow\, Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue\, Burnt Sienna\, Crimson\, and Paynes Grey\nA set of brushes suitable for use with acrylics\nA jar for holding your water\nA palette- a Stay wet palette\nKitchen roll\nPalette knives or paint shapers if you have them\nRachel will provide 2 wooden panels for each participant (included in the ticket price). Please bring spare canvases\, boards or paper if you would like to work across multiple paintings\n\n\n\nRachel will also be bring spare crayons\, brushes and paint colours. There will also be a chance to look through the work of other artists on day two and all students will receive handouts on techniques and colour theory.\n\n  \n \n  \n\n  \nStanton Guildhouse\n \n  \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:‘Unlawful Killings & Rough Justice’ - Tales from the bench by Wendy Joseph KC
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC seeks to answer: \nDo we have the law we deserve?\nHas justice improved for the victim\, the accused and society?\nWhat even is justice? \nDescribed as a ‘natural storyteller’ by The Times and based on the book which was described by Lady Hale as ‘compelling’\, this talk is given by a former judge of which Cherie Blair stated\, “If ever I was on trial I would want my judge to be this one.” Hot on the heels of her Sunday Times bestseller ‘Unlawful Killings’\, Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC skilfully reconstructs four courtroom dramas\, drawing on her many years’ experience as a murder judge to ask whether our justice system works\, and if it has improved over the centuries. Have we got any better at delivering what is right and fair to both the perpetrators and the victims of society’s most heinous crimes? \nFrom the trial of a child charged with disposing of dismembered body parts\, to the woman accused of killing her own husband\, Joseph is utterly compelling as she sets out how the system works. But\, as she compares these modern courtroom tales with eerily similar cases and miscarriages of justice from years ago\, might the most chilling story of all be that the lessons of the past have yet to be learned? \nThis talk illuminates the struggles of any one of us caught up in our legal system – but particularly the marginalized and the easily exploited – and grapples with the concept of ‘justice for all’ so that we might demand better. \nUntil March 2022 Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC was a judge at the Old Bailey\, sitting on criminal cases\, trying mainly allegations of murder and other homicide. When she moved to the Old Bailey in 2012 she was the only woman amongst sixteen judges\, and only the third woman ever to hold a permanent position there. She was also a Diversity and Community Relations Judge\, working to promote understanding between the judiciary and many different sectors of our community\, particularly those from less privileged and minority groups. She mentors young people\, from a variety of backgrounds\, who hope for a career in law and has a special interest in helping women. \nThere will be a Q&A Session at the end of the talk. Ticket-holders will be able to submit questions by email in advance.  There will be a book-signing after the talk for those who have pre-ordered copies of her books. \nThis talk will take place at Cidermill Theatre in Chipping Campden\, 10 mins drive from Broadway where there is ample parking. \nTickets £20 \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Silver Clay Earrings Jewellery Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Jo Richards of Faye Benjamin Jewellery for an introduction to Silver Clay workshop making your very own stunning solid silver drop earrings over the course of 3 hours. Jo has over 25 years of experience designing and creating jewellery. \nSilver Clay can be cut\, shaped and textured with ease – a wonderful way to create your very own unique jewellery. \nSuitable for complete beginners\, you will work at a relaxed pace with time to ask questions along the way. \nYour earrings will be fired and finished during the session so you can wear your creation home with pride! \nWhat is Silver Clay \nSilver Clay is made up of recycled pure silver particles bound together with water and a non-toxic organic binder. It can be moulded\, shaped\, pressed\, stamped and cut. When the piece is finished\, it’s dried thoroughly and fired with a blow torch or in a kiln. During firing\, the organic binder burns away leaving the silver particles to fuse into solid silver. \nNot only is Silver Clay created from recycled silver\, it’s also fabulously versatile and truly beautiful. Being 99.9% Fine Silver (Sterling Silver is only 92.5%) means the piece will be of a higher silver content\, less liable to tarnishing and when turned into a unique handmade piece\, just that little bit more precious… \nCome along with a friend and spend an afternoon learning a new skill and walk away with a beautiful memento of your day. \nAll materials and tools will be provided\, including sterling silver ear wires. \nPlease wear sturdy shoes. \nTickets £75  (10 Places) \n

SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Gardens: Russell House & Abbots Grange
DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century\, and continue this theme today. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nRussell House (starting point)\nAbbots Grange\n\nThe tour will start at Russell House which was the home of the Broadway Art Colony in the 1880’s\, and was the setting for Sargent’s Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose which now hangs in the Tate in London; a beautiful one acre garden including gothic tower\, gazebo and ice-house. \nThe tour will then continue on to Abbots Grange\, a short walk away\, the grounds of which used to be connected by a garden gate during the arts colony and Sargent years. \nSat in over 8 acres of parkland grounds\, Abbots Grange is the oldest dwelling in Broadway and one of the oldest domestic/monastic properties in the UK\, built during the early part of the 14th Century. It is considered by the Institute of Archaeology to be one of the most important and best preserved English monastic manor houses\, and has a rich and fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1880’s by designer William Morris and then the American Frank Millet and became a sanctuary for some of the greatest names in European and American culture in the 1880’s. \nMarion Mako is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nwww.makogardens.co.uk \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two.
