SUMMARY:En Plein Air Painting in Watercolour with Bobby Open
DESCRIPTION:An exciting opportunity to paint in a beautiful private garden on the Upper High Street in Broadway.  True to its name\, The Hill is a classic Cotswold stone house nestled in a hillside garden with topiary\, mature trees and summerhouses\, and fabulous views to Bredon Hill and the Malverns.  Participants will be painting outdoors with the aim of capturing aspects of the garden in vibrant and expressive watercolour.   \nBobby Open won the Great Broadway Paint Off in 2023 and paints in watercolour. \nThe day will include demonstrations of useful techniques and approaches to working outdoors in watercolour.  There will be plenty of time for participants to explore the garden and paint fragments and views that catch their eye\, particularly looking at how nature relates to more formal elements.   \nSuitable for those with experience of painting in watercolour. \nBobby’s paintings can be seen on Instagram at www.instagram.com/bobbyopen \nTickets £100 (15 Places) \nMATERIALS LIST \nThe materials listed below are only a general guide based on what I use.  Painting materials can be expensive and\, whilst the quality of materials tends to be reflected in the quality of one’s paintings\, suggestions about materials will be given during the workshop so if in doubt just bring whatever materials you already have and do not rush into buying more. \nBRUSHES \nI mainly use pointed round pure Kolinsky sable brushes (sometimes called designer round).  Typically\, in the studio\, I use da Vinci series 35; outdoors\, I use Escoda Reserva\, Isabey or Rosemary & Co travel brushes\, because the handle protects the brush when travelling.  I tend to use brush sizes 4\, 6\, 8\, 10 and 12.  If I had to choose only one\, it would be a versatile size 7 or 8. \nPAINTS \nI use artists’ quality paint from tubes\, squeezed into pans in a watercolour paint box.  It is essential that the tip of the brush can pick up wet paint: if the paint is too hard\, brush tips become worn and the paint will be less vibrant.  A small plastic spray bottle can be useful to keep paints moist.  Matchsticks or toothpicks are also useful to stir up paint. \nThere are different types of paint box.  Frank Herring makes a good\, affordable plastic paint box.  There are also enameled metal boxes\, including aluminium\, steel and brass: aluminium and brass tend to be more durable (steel boxes eventually rust). \n\nMy full colour palette includes a range of blues\, reds\, yellows and earth colours.  I use Holbein Artists’ Watercolour tubes (H) and Winsor and Newton Professional (W&N).  The colours I’ve underlined are the ones I use most outdoors:\nBlues: Cerulean Blue (H); Cobalt Blue; Ultramarine Blue Deep (H) or French Ultramarine (W&N).\nViolets: Cobalt Violet (H); Ultramarine Violet (W&N); Mineral Violet (H).\nReds: Carmine (H); Cadmium Red Deep (H) or Cadmium Red (W&N).\nYellows: New Gamboge (H); Cadmium Yellow Pale (H); Cadmium Yellow Light (H); Cadmium Yellow Deep (H); Cadmium Orange (W&N).\nEarth Colours and Greens: Yellow Ochre (H); Raw Umber; Burnt Sienna; Burnt Umber; Viridian.\nOccasional Colours: Ivory Black; Jaune Brilliant (H); Lavender (H); other greens such as Cobalt\, Turquoise\, Olive\, Oxide of Chromium and Perylene.\n\nPAPER \n\nI typically use 140lb Fabriano Artistico extra white cold pressed 100% cotton acid-free paper.  Sheets cut into half or quarter are usually more cost effective than blocks.  Saunders Waterford and Arches are also good options.\nA sketchbook can be useful for making notes and quick compositional sketches.\n\nOTHER ITEMS \nI use a Pentel 0.9mm B mechanical pencil; a Faber Castell foldable water pot; metal clips or masking tape to hold paper to a sheet of foamboard or cardboard; kitchen paper and a sponge.  Erasers are banned!  (Not really\, but a soft putty eraser will help to protect the paper surface).  A bottle of water.  Penknife. \nA cap or rimmed hat is useful to limit glare.  If you prefer to sit\, a folding chair or stool may be handy.  A folding easel will be necessary unless you are happy working in your lap.  Please dress for the weather and bring sunscreen/bug spray as appropriate! \nThe Hill\n \n  \n \n  \n \n \n  \n  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Whispers and Melodies' Recital - Soprano Rose Johnson & Jamie Salters on Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Whispers and Melodies\, an intimate recital exploring the delicate interplay between soprano and clarinet. Featuring Louis Sphor’s 6 Deutsche Lieder\, Schubert’s lyrical The Shepherd on the Rock\, and a new commission by Jeremy Clay\, this program celebrates both the timeless beauty of classical song and the expressive possibilities of the clarinet in creating unforgettable musical moments. \nRose Johnson is a soprano from Broadway\, now embarking on a professional career after receiving bursary support from Broadway Arts Festival during her studies. She will be accompanied by Jamie Salters on Clarinet. \nHer recital shows her remarkable talent in a classical programme\, in the stunning setting of the music room at Court Farm\, at the top of Broadway High Street. \nThere will be a short interval \nNote there is a second Soprano recital starting at 11:30am the same day and guests are invited to enjoy the beautiful private gardens at Court Farm with a picnic\, if attending both. \nTickets £18 \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nRose Johnson \nRose Johnson is a Soprano based in Birmingham and West Midlands. Rose graduated in 2022 with a distinction from the Advanced Performance Diploma (APD) course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Throughout her studies Rose was generously supported by The Headley scholarship\, Sophies Silver Lining Fund and the Broadway Arts Festival Trust (bursary student). \nUntil recently Rose has been in post as the Opera Outreach Officer at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and recently started a job teaching at the Junior Department at RBC. Most of her performances this year have been to diverse communities with the RBC LEAP Ensemble and audiences of Primary School Children. Alongside this\, Rose continues her work as a Soprano and is delighted to have been invited back to RBC to perform ‘Lady Billows’ in Britten’s Albert Herring. Recently\, she has also enjoyed being a soloist for Brahms’ German Requiem and Mozart’s Requiem. \nWhilst studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire\, Rose was awarded the Anthony Cross Memorial prize for her fantastic degree results\, first place in the Vocal Department Prize and Mario Lanza Opera Prize. She was also awarded second place in the 2022 Ashleyan Opera Prize and third place in the 2022 Edward Brooks English Song Prize. In 2021\, she received second place in the Edward Brooks Lieder Prize. \nRose thoroughly enjoys bringing complex and interesting female characters to life. During 2022\, Rose had the privilege of bringing the role of ‘Sarah Roberts’ to life in Stephen Mcneff’s Banished\, one of her most enjoyable and challenging roles to date. \nOutside of RBC\, Rose recently sang and recorded Chorus with the BBC National Chorus of Wales on their project ‘The Song of Songs’ by Walter Arlen with the English Symphony Orchestra. She also recently gave a recital in the Jennifer Blackwell Performance Space at Symphony Hall\, Birmingham. \nRose’s performance highlights include; Learning and rehearsing the role of ‘Confidante’ from Strauss’ Elektra with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra\, performing as a vocalist with the BBCNOW in the first ever BBC Relaxed Prom and singing in the Chorus of Tosca at the Abu Dhabi Festival. \nThe Music Room at Court Farm \n  \n \n \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:'Frida' Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce that we are teaming up with the Broadway Cinema Club to bring you a screening of ‘Frida’ on the evening of Thursday 12th June. \nFRIDA is a vivid cinematic rendering of the life of artist Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek)\, released in 2002. \nDying at 47\, Frida’s life was one filled with tragedy and turmoil far beyond her years. While undoubtedly helping to fuel her passion for painting\, her relationship with fellow artist\, husband\, and sometimes mentor Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina) is portrayed as tortuous on many levels. Frida is shown to follow his lead with both extramarital female partners and male partners\, including Soviet political exile Leon Trotsky (Geoffrey Rush). \nThe time period of Frida’s life is one of great political strife and revolutionary ideals in Mexico\, and the film seethes with the fervor of unrest. Her artwork is vividly woven into the film through digital transitions that seem to bring her paintings to life at times\, or else incorporate her visual motifs into powerful dream sequences. It will captivate any viewer with even a passing interest in understanding the fevered lives of such great artists. \nRunning time 122 minutes. Suitable for age 16+ \nDoors open at 6:15pm and the film will start at 7pm \nView the film trailer \nTickets £6 \nTickets can also be purchased on the door (card/cash) \n \n

SUMMARY:En Plein Air Painting 2 day Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:Learn about painting the light and capturing the essence while painting plein air in the stunning private gardens of Springfield House in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo is an internationally renowned plein air painter\, Vice President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and elected member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of two books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’ and ‘Plein air painting in oils’\, as well as a Broadway Arts Festival Ambassador. \nHaidee-Jo’s work features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills\, which result in lively celebratory paintings that glow with light and sing with colour. \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. Haidee-Jo will be working with oil paints\, but acrylics or gouache can be used if preferred. \nwww.haideejo.com \nTickets £245 (15 Places) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 17th March. \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. If you buy more than two tickets for this event they will be refunded (less the booking fees) and put back up for sale. \nMaterials List / What to bring: \n\nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because\, even on a warm day\, you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too.\nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea.\nA viewfinder if you have one.\nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain.\nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you have practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it. \nA stool if you prefer to sit.\n\nBasic colour palette Haidee-Jo uses on location;  \n\nTitanium white\, Cadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake\nCadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow\nCadmium red\nAlizarin crimson\nKings blue deep\nPhthalo blue lake \nUltramarine blue\nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna/raw umber\nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a small round or two in nylon or sable. I particularly like to use Rosemary brushes’ Ivory or Eclipse ranges. I have a twelve brush long handled set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website.\n\nPainting panels – any well primed boards are fine\, such as MDF panels with several coats of acrylic ‘gesso’ primer. The Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer works well. \nMy preference is for an oil primed linen canvas mounted to board\, or you can make similar with a muslin cloth and acrylic primer (see my Instagram story highlight on panel prep). \nSize wise think small and fast\, recommended sizes such as 8” x 10”\, 9” x 12”\, 10” x 10”\, 11” x 14”. \nI suggest pre-tinting the boards beforehand so that they are not stark white\, but more of a light to mid-tone warm grey. A tiny amount of burnt sienna and ultramarine mixed in with plenty of turps and rubbed all over will give you a pleasant light grey which will have a warm or cool bias depending on your mix.  \nOr for a faster drying alternative mix acrylic paint colours with your acrylic primer to a suitable tint (you can’t do this if your surface is oil primed of course). \nHaidee-Jo’s essential equipment list – which all fits in a medium sized rucksack  \n\nPochade box\nLightweight camera tripod\n2 or 4 panels in a small panel carrier\nSmall tubes of oil colour in a zip bag\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\n\n \n \n\n \nSpringfield House Gardens \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Sterling Renaissance - British silver design from the 1950’s to date
DESCRIPTION:As part of our ‘Silver Day’ at the festival\, join Silver Historian John Andrew for a fascinating talk on silver design. \nThe story of the Renaissance  is unbelievable – a grumpy king\, the controller of London Transport\, civil servants galore\, the Royal Navy’s Camouflage Directorate\, an unemployed old Etonian\, an architect\, a fine painter\, an Earl’s daughter\, an American socialite and of course silversmiths. If you like a good true story and beautiful handmade objects – this is definitely for you! \nAbout John Andrew: \nJohn Andrew is The Curator of The Pearson Silver Collection\, the largest collection of post-World War II British designer silver in private hands and is regarded as being of national importance. A selection of pieces from the collection will form an exhibition at Court Barn Museum in Chipping Campden during the festival. \n‘Born a collector\, aged seven it was coins. In my teens\, antique silver emerged. Before university\, I sold my coins\, but began buying silver. When I graduated I had enough to lay a table for a dinner party. The current collection began in the early 1980s. By 2000 I had sold all my other collections\, including thirty pieces of Fabergé.’ \nThe ticket price for this talk includes entry to the exhibition of some of  The Pearson Silver Collection at Court Barn Museum in Chipping Campden\, a 5 minute walk from the theatre. \nTicket holders will have the chance to submit questions for the speaker in advance. \nThere will also be a talk in the afternoon at 3pm on the local success story of British brand Robert Welch\, again at Cidermill Theatre\, so why not make a day of it? \nSilver Day is kindly sponsored by The Goldsmiths’ Company \nTickets £20 (includes cost of entry to the exhibitions at Court Barn Museum) \n \n  \n  \n
