SUMMARY:Robin Hood by Illyria - Family Outdoor Theatre on the Village Green
DESCRIPTION:From the earliest ballads of Robin Hood\, some pre-dating Chaucer\, Illyria has created a fast-moving\, fun-packed family show. \nWhile good King Richard is away fighting the crusades\, his friend Robert Fitzooth\, under the assumed name of Robin Hood\, resolves to relieve corrupt landowners of their wealth\, to ruin the inept Sheriff of Nottingham and to do all he can to prevent the power-mad Prince John from seizing the throne. \nFeaturing tales of camaraderie\, good against evil\, swashbuckling action and riotous comedy\, this remains one of Illyria’s most popular ever titles. You’ll definitely laugh\, you’ll probably cry – and if you’re not cheering at the archery competition involving the entire audience then you must be dead. We also guarantee you will learn new uses for the phrase “Don’t Do This At Home”. \nIllyria are a new theatre company to Broadway Arts Festival who we are excited to welcome as part of our family programme of events. \n“Top notch outdoor theatre” The Telegraph \nRunning time (approx): 1hr 50mins (inc 20 minute interval) \nSuitable for ages 5+ (younger children also welcome!) \nThis performance will be taking place outside on the village green in the centre of Broadway. Bring camping chairs or a blanket to sit on. \nThe performance will go ahead unless weather conditions are extreme (e.g. high winds\, lightning or temperatures in excess of 36oC). \nThere will be ice cream from Gorsehill Abbey and cold drinks on sale. \nTickets: \n£50 Family (2 adults & 2 under 16s) \n£18 Adults \n£12 Under 16s \nUnder 2s Free \nKindly sponsored by Broadway Parish Council\n  \nABOUT ILLYRIA: \nIllyria was created in 1991\, and ever since has delighted audiences the length and breadth of the UK\, and in the Netherlands\, Germany\, Switzerland\, France\, the United States and Canada. \nIllyria has also won 4 international “Best Performance” awards and attracted numerous “5-star” and “Critics’ Choice” reviews for the lively clarity of its approach to Shakespeare’s plays\, the high quality of its shows for families and the refreshing originality of its English classics adaptations and Gilbert & Sullivan performances. \nIllyria’s mission is simply stated: to create a varied programme of outstandingly enjoyable theatre and to make it available for everyone to see. \n \n

SUMMARY:2 Day En Plein Air Painting Workshop with Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to practice plein air painting in oils or acrylics with acclaimed artist Haidee-Jo Summers\, in one of the most exclusive private gardens in Broadway. \nLearn about capturing the essence while plein air painting in the incredible garden setting of Court Farm on the famous Upper High Street in Broadway. \nHaidee-Jo is an internationally renowned plein air painter and member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. She is the author of two books published by Search Press: ‘Vibrant Oils’ and ‘Plein air painting in oils’ \nThis two day workshop is best suited to those with some experience of painting outdoors. Haidee-Jo will be working with oil paints but acrylics can be used if preferred. \nTo find out more about Haidee-Jo visit: www.haideejo.co \nTickets £220  (15 available) \nHaidee-Jo will also be doing a demonstration on the afternoon of Saturday 10th June from 2-4pm at the Lifford Hall in Broadway (150 tickets available) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 11th March\, and 1 week earlier (4th March) for Benefactors of the festival who qualify for Priority Booking. Note: this event in 2021 sold out in the first hour! \nYou can become a Benefactor for as little as £50 and support our Outreach Projects in doing so\, applications are now open. \nIf you are not a 2023 Benefactor\, please do not purchase a Benefactor ticket as this ticket will be cancelled and an admin fee of £10 charged. \nPlease note: Due to the intense interest in this workshop (and to make it fair for all) we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to 2. This applies to benefactors of the festival and members of the general public. If you buy more than 2 they will be refunded and put back up for sale. \n        \n  \nMaterials \nClothing wise think layers and waterproofs with sturdy and comfortable footwear because even on a warm day you can soon feel chilly when sitting or standing still for long periods. Bring a sunhat or cap\, and sunscreen too. \nA small lightweight sketchbook and black or grey marker pen or soft pencil for quick ‘planning’ sketches is a good idea.\nA viewfinder if you have one. \nAn umbrella is useful for sun or rain. \nA lightweight easel\, or an all-in-one system such as an Open Box M\, New Wave u.go or similar pochade box\, together with a sturdy camera tripod to mount it on. Most importantly make sure you  \nhave practiced using it before the workshop\, know how to assemble it and have a method for comfortably carrying it.  \nA stool if you prefer to sit. \nBasic colour palette I use on location;  \nTitanium white\nCadmium lemon yellow or bright yellow lake \nCadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow \nCadmium red\nAlizarin crimson \nKings blue deep\nPhthalo blue lake \nUltramarine blue \nPhthalo green lake or viridian\nTransparent red oxide or burnt sienna\nRaw sienna/raw umber \nBrushes. A range of sizes but mostly flat and filbert shapes\, plus a small round or two in nylon or sable. I particularly like to use Rosemary brushes’ Ivory or Eclipse ranges. \nI have a ten brush long handled set available from Rosemary & Co\, just search Haidee-Jo Summers on their website. \nPainting panels – any well primed boards are fine\, such as MDF panels with several coats of acrylic ‘gesso’ primer. The Michael Harding non absorbent acrylic primer works well. \nMy preference is for an oil primed linen canvas mounted to board\, or you can make similar with a muslin cloth and acrylic primer (see my Instagram story highlight on panel prep) \nSize wise think small and fast\, recommended sizes such as 8” x 10”\, 9” x 12”\, 10” x 10”\, 11” x 14”. \nI suggest pre-tinting the boards beforehand so that they are not stark white\, but more of a light to mid-tone warm grey. A tiny amount of burnt sienna and ultramarine mixed in with plenty of turps and rubbed all over will give you a pleasant light grey which will have a warm or cool bias depending on your mix. \nOr for a faster drying alternative mix acrylic paint colours with your acrylic primer to a suitable tint (you can’t do this if your surface is oil primed of course). \nMy essential equipment list – which all fits in a medium sized rucksack \nPochade box\nLightweight camera tripod\n2 or 4 panels in a small panel carrier\nSmall tubes of oil colour in a zip bag\nPaper towels\nPainting apron\nLeakproof container of low odour solvent and small jar of oil or painting medium\nPalette knife\nBrushes in tube or brush roll \n\n\n\nThe famous private gardens at Court Farm:

SUMMARY:Abstraction through Thumbnail Sketching at Snowshill Manor NT - Tansy Hargan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be based in the gardens and orchard of National Trust property\, Snowshill Manor\, just a 5 min drive outside Broadway village.\nSnowshill Manor is a beautiful Cotswold Stone manor house built c1550 and restored by architect\, artist\, poet and craftsman Charles Paget Wade. The terraced gardens here are the perfect place to unwind and to explore hidden vistas and quiet corners to enjoy your sketching. \nThis workshop focuses on using a viewfinder and thumbnail grid to crop and sketch multiple compositions across a sketchbook spread using mixed media (including ink and wash\, sequential abstraction\, colour blocking and found paper collage). The rhythm and momentum of the method makes for an immersive and productive session\, resulting in an array of annotated miniature scenes\, which may simply be a stand-alone pleasure or could feed into another creative process. \nPlease note that the workshop is being held at Snowshill Manor Gardens. There is a 15 minute uphill walk to the gardens and house and there are numerous steps and rough paths involved in moving around the gardens. If you have any concerns about accessibility please contact Julie Allen ahead of booking. \nThere will also be an option to explore the house itself (although sketching within the house will be limited to pencils only). \nTansy has 60k+ followers on Instagram under the name ‘palimpsestparade’ and she describes herself as a UK mixed media artist (landscape architect gone rogue). She runs online courses and workshops and we are absolutely privileged to welcome her here for this series of face to face workshops\, which promise to inspire your future approach to sketching. \nNo experience necessary. \nAll materials for this workshop will be provided including the viewfinders\, a small sketchbook\, pens\, waterbrushes\, pencils\, etc. However\, if you’d prefer to bring along any of your own materials and sketchbooks please do so.  \nYou may wish to bring a seat to sit on whilst sketching. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and footwear. \nThere is a café onsite where you can purchase refreshments and lunch – or please bring your own. \nNOTE: in the event of adverse weather forecast we may need to relocate this workshop to another location.  \nTickets £85  (12 available) \nTickets go on sale through the website at 10am on 11th March\, and 1 week earlier (4th March) for Benefactors of the festival who qualify for Priority Booking. You can become a Benefactor for as little as £50\, applications are now open. \n  \nThe viewfinder: \n \n  \n  \nSnowshill Manor National Trust: \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Portrait Painting in Oils: Demonstration by Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA
DESCRIPTION:Watch contemporary impressionist artist Haidee-Jo Summers ROI RSMA\, paint a complete portrait from start to finish from a live model.  \nHaidee-Jo strives for simplicity and economy in her work\, and she will show you how she makes every mark count.  \nRichard Cornwall was the winner of ‘Best Beard in Broadway‘ and will be Haidee-Jo’s model for the afternoon! \nThis event will be taking place in the Lifford Hall in Broadway. \nTickets £17 \nAbout Haidee-Jo Summers: \nHaidee-Jo is a full-time professional artist best known for painting ‘en plein air’. An elected member of the Royal Institute of Oil painters (ROI) and the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) her work can be seen each year at the Mall Galleries in London in these prestigious society exhibitions. Haidee-Jo writes regularly for The Artist magazine and is proud to be an editorial consultant alongside David Curtis ROI RSMA. Her first book on oil painting\, ‘Vibrant Oils’ (published by Search Press)\, has been reprinted in Spanish\, Italian\, French and Chinese. Her second book\, Plein air painting in oils\, has been released in spring 2022 and is already reprinted in Russian. She has produced two popular DVDs with APV films. Although oils are very much her preferred medium\, in the 1990’s Haidee-Jo produced a large body of work for the Encyclopaedia of Watercolour Techniques and is an avid sketcher. In recent years she has been invited to judge UK and international plein air events\, after winning many prizes for her work which features fresh and vibrant brushwork coupled with keen drawing and observational skills. \nHaidee-Jo gained a degree in illustration following an art foundation course and graduated in 1994. She has been exhibiting and teaching ever since\, in recent years having cut back on teaching commitments to focus on painting and writing. She believes very much in continuing to grow and develop\, all the while striving to express her personal voice in paint and to do so more and more succinctly. \n‘My work is a celebration of light filled moments revealed in rich and vibrant oil paint using my personal visual language of fresh and direct brushmarks. Painting en plein air is central to my practice but I am equally at home working from a model\, still life or interior. I find beauty in the ordinary\, mundane and intimate rather than the grand vista. Coastal locations\, domestic interiors and gardens and allotments provide me with rich and endless subject material. \nMy approach is one of simplicity and economy\, striving to make every mark count in my earnest pursuance of capturing the poetry of a fleeting effect of light.’ \nVisit www.haideejo.com \n
