DESCRIPTION:An exclusive tour of Arts & Crafts masterpiece Madresfield Court & Gardens to discover how it became the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh & Brideshead Revisited. \nMadresfield Court near Malvern\, is a moated stately house\, and home to the Lygon family for almost 900 years. It played a significant part in the Arts & Crafts movement and was the inspiration for Evelyn Waugh’s novel\, Brideshead Revisited. \nThe afternoon tour includes return coach travel from Broadway\, a guided tour of the house\, and time to explore the gardens and have refreshments. \nThe coach will set off from Broadway at 1:30pm for the hour drive to Madresfield Court\, arriving back into Broadway at approximately 6pm. SUMMARY:Broadway Arts Colony Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:In the late 19th century Broadway turned from a sleepy backwater into a hub of creativity thanks to an influx of mainly American artists\, writers and actors. \nLearn all about this world-famously influential colony on an informative\, illustrated walk around beautiful Broadway with local art historian\, Karen Bloch\, and how one of the world’s most famous artworks was painted here in Broadway. \nThe walk will last approximately 2 hrs on relatively flat paved ground\, so would also be suitable for motorised wheelchair users. We will go ahead even if it is raining\, so please dress for all weathers and wear comfortable shoes. \nThe walk will start and finish at the war memorial in the centre of the village by the village green. SUMMARY:A Tour of 2 Private Gardens: Russell House & Abbots Grange
DESCRIPTION:Broadway’s gardens have been the backdrop for artists\, writers\, actors and musicians for over a century\, and continue this theme today. \nOn this walking tour of two famous private gardens with Marion Mako\, we shall hear about some of the stories behind those who created\, inhabited and visited them\, all looking their finest in June. \nThe morning garden tour will visit: \n\n\n\nRussell House (starting point)\nAbbots Grange\n\nThe tour will start at Russell House which was the home of the Broadway Art Colony in the 1880’s\, and was the setting for Sargent’s Carnation\, Lily\, Lily\, Rose which now hangs in the Tate in London; a beautiful one acre garden including gothic tower\, gazebo and ice-house. \nThe tour will then continue on to Abbots Grange\, a short walk away\, the grounds of which used to be connected by a garden gate during the arts colony and Sargent years. \nSat in over 8 acres of parkland grounds\, Abbots Grange is the oldest dwelling in Broadway and one of the oldest domestic/monastic properties in the UK\, built during the early part of the 14th Century. It is considered by the Institute of Archaeology to be one of the most important and best preserved English monastic manor houses\, and has a rich and fascinating history. It was discovered in the 1880’s by designer William Morris and then the American Frank Millet and became a sanctuary for some of the greatest names in European and American culture in the 1880’s. \nMarion Mako is a freelance garden historian and designer who has worked in both the UK and USA. \nHer design work focuses on planting\, taking inspiration from various historical styles\, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. As part of the series of The Historic Gardens of England\, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens\, as well as contributing to the gardening website Gardenista. In addition Marion is researching the gardens of two large private estates\, creating legacy books for their owners\, as well as leading a wide variety of bespoke garden tours. She is also a Trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire. \nwww.makogardens.co.uk \nTickets £25 \nDue to the intense interest in this event\, and to make it fair for all\, we are limiting the number of tickets any person can buy to two. SUMMARY:Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath in conversation with the BBC's Nick Owen MBE
DESCRIPTION:Without Black Sabbath there wouldn’t be heavy metal\, they defined an entire genre. Tony Iommi’s detuned guitar style and deep resonating dark riffs made them sound like no other band.\nTony will be in conversation with his close friend\, the BBC’s Nick Owen at the new Cidermill Theatre in Chipping Campden. They’ll cover his early years and relationship with music growing up\, the accident that ultimately led to the birth of metal\, early influences\, the formation of Black Sabbath\, tales from the road and the very first Heavy Metal ballet experience… There will be a Q&A session at the end\, ticket-holders will be given the opportunity to submit questions in advance. \nAbout Tony Iommi:\n\nBirmingham’s Tony Iommi co-founded the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath\, and is the band’s guitarist\, leader\, primary composer\, and sole continuous member for over five decades. He is considered one of the trailblazers and pioneers of heavy music. Overcoming the loss of fingertips in a sheet metal guillotine before his career had really started\, he was determined to continue\, and the results speak for themselves. Later in life he dealt with Grade III lymphoma continuing to work on a new record that went to number one globally.  With around 100 million record sales\, a New York Times bestselling autobiography\, 4 Grammy’s\, induction into both US and UK Music Halls of Fame and numerous awards\, he’s part of rock’s royalty. \n\nAbout Nick Owen MBE:\nNick Owen has been broadcasting on radio and television for more than fifty years\, mostly on tv. Born and brought up in Hertfordshire\, he has spent more than half his life living and working in the West Midlands. He is perhaps best known for his enduring on air partnership with Anne Diamond\, both in the 1980s at the dawn of breakfast television and in the 1990s when they hosted Good Morning with Anne and Nick together. Nick also spent some years in the 80s and early 90s as ITV Sport’s main presenter with his regular show\, Midweek Sport Special. During this time\, he also anchored the Olympic Games of 1988 and the World Cup of 1990. He has presented BBC Midlands Today since 1997. Nick is married to Vicki and\, between them\, they have six children and five grandchildren.\n\nVenue:\nThis talk will take place at the new state of the art Cidermill Theatre in Chipping Campden\, 10 mins drive from Broadway where there is parking. \nTicket holders will be able to scan a QR code in the foyer and auditorium in order to get free parking. \n\nThere is no assigned seating.
