Enjoy a historical walk around the beautiful village of Broadway and discover the hidden history of this ancient village through its buildings and their associated stories.

Little is recorded until 972 when King Edgar granted a Charter to the Benedictine Monastery of Pershore. Edgar, the peace-maker, introduced (the) ordnance of the ‘Hundreds’ where (shires) were divided into smaller districts called ‘hundreds’ – the inhabitants being responsible for the suppression of robbery, murder and violence! Broadway became part of the Pershore Hundreds and became the Abbot’s summer retreat. Abbot’s Grange was built in 1320 and remains today Broadway’s oldest building, and so we begin…

The village has such a rich heritage including a world-famous colony of American artists and writers who visited and worked here in the late 19th century as well as the strong links to the arts and crafts movement and the renowned 20th Century furniture designer Sir Gordon Russell who based his company in the village.

The walk will last approximately 2 hours on relatively flat paved ground, so would also be suitable for motorised wheelchair users.

We will go ahead even if it is raining, so please dress for all weathers and wear comfortable shoes.

The walk will start and finish at the festival ticket office on the village green.

Your guide will be local resident Gordon Franks.
